Without spoiling the ending, this book is an adventure that is full of twists and turns, a real page-turner.  

Magda is having a terrible summer.  Last year her father and her brother Tom died in a boating accident.  This year her mother is sad and distant and her friends play mean tricks on her.  A dog attacks her and an old man accuses her.

Then Magda meets Brent.  Their revenge plot leads them into danger, while Magda struggles to sort out her loyalties. 

This adventure story centres on Mayne Island, one of the Southern Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia off the coast of British Columbia.

Magda was panting but she didn't stop running. She felt the sting of cold air against her face and broke through the salal that covered the entrance. She ran, sure-footed now, along the driftwood logs and up the steep bank.

"Quick, Brent," she called over her shoulder. "Grab your bike."

There was no answer from Brent. She looked over her shoulder. He wasn't with her. She fell to her knees. She was alone.
