As our firstborn was diagnosed as hydrocephalic; with bi-lateral clefting of lip and palate, the cleft was all the way in to the eyelids on both sides...
With nothing to secure the nose to the center line, the bottom of the lip was where the center of the eyebrows would be.
We later learned that the clefting would have occurred in the first half of the first trimester of what was a rocky pregancy, with severe nausea into the second trimester.
Jonathan was not only our firstborn, he was the first grandchild on both sides and greatly anticipated by numerous aunts and uncles. Like a broken animal on the side of the road, in other circumstances our son would not have received any medical attention.
