Last year, Mrs Mallard had great problems finding the perfect nest and learnt a lot not only from her experience but also that of the other birds on Platt Fields lake. This year, she is determined to find the perfect nest, safe and warm, for her ducklings to hatch in and a neighbouring school seems to offer the perfect solution. Once the ducklings have hatched, she faces another problem. How will she get her young out of the secure courtyard and back to their home on the lake?
Regular visitors to Platt Fields park in Manchester (UK), will know many of the characters featured in this book. It also contains lots of useful facts to help children recognise the birds that they see on the lake.
Excerpt
1) As Spring arrived, Mrs Mallard’s thoughts turned to ducklings and to finding the perfect nest. Last year, it had been more difficult than she could ever have imagined. She had watched Mr and Mrs Coot building their big and showy nest near the pool edge. As people came to feed the birds on the lake, the nest was surrounded by geese, fighting to get to the scraps of bread. “Not a good place to build a nest,” thought Mrs Mallard.
