This anthology, edited by John Howard Reid, contains 90 poems by the late Margaret Reid, including the title poem which won the "Poem of the Year" award from the Central Coast Poetry Society in 1993. After her death, the Margaret Reid Prize for Traditional Verse was established in her honor. "Mandi" was also a distinguished artist, who won many awards for her paintings and sculptures. Her poetry in this large-format book is illustrated with 70 of her famous black-and-white drawings. (Warning: 30 drawings contain surrealistic nudity).
The 90 poems in this collection range from the politically oriented "America" and "Dear Mr President" to "An Argument with God" and "A Headache for the Messiah"; from recollections of the past in "Requiem for a Ghost Town" and "The Coming of Wisdom" to the humorous "Brains" and "The Great Art Happening"; from the descriptive "Lizard" and "Yarramalong Valley" (Chief Runner-Up for "Poem of the Year" 1994) to the personal "Was It a Dream?" and "Soundings from Other Spaces".
Women's issues are examined in "The Barbieization of the Western Woman" and "Portrait of an Ordinary Woman"; artistic issues in "The Muse Is Coming" and "Portrait of an Artist".
