Excerpt
One evening Kenneth passes the door to the room his
mother works in, but this time the door is not closed. “No
locks on the door?” Kenneth says aloud.
The music in the background is soft and soothing.
Kenneth takes a step inside expecting his mother to call
out, “Close the door, Kenneth,” but he does not hear the
sound of his mother’s voice. Kenneth feels his heart
thumping through his skin. Would Kenneth finally find
the truth out about his father behind these walls?
The lights are dimmed. The fireplace is filled with a
crackling sound as the flames start to rise. He can smell
the fresh smell of bark from the wood. There is pine in the
air as though he stood in the midst of the woods. Yet,
Kenneth stands in a room he has never been in before. The
walls are dark brown and the floors are cream colored with
reddish symbols running through the cracks. From wall
to wall there are paintings of dragons, wizards, creatures

unknown, and faraway oceans he had never seen before.
He gazes closer to see how alive they became the closer he
got. In bewilderment of the details on the paintings,
Kenneth quickly moves away turning his head from the
paintings. Racks are filled with books before him. No titles
on the books, only descriptions in a language he cannot
make out. As Kenneth steps closer he sees a stairway
leading to an upper room. A light is shining down from the
stairway. Still no sight of his mother, he continues
thinking each step might bring him closer to the truth.
Kenneth presses forward up the stairway. Kenneth hears
a voice above. A man’s voice singing…
Peace on earth can it be? Per-rumba-bah-bah! Per rumbabah-
bah!
It sounds like Christmas in the winter’s month of
December. Was Kenneth’s mother listening to a caroling
song? Still with the need to know, Kenneth continues
forward to see who is singing this song. Just above the
stairway, there it is standing still—white as snow—Little
White Dragon. He has a little golden crown on his head,
with small black hairs beneath his little crown. Long
eyelashes, eyes dark green. He is covered with thick white
fur too. His lips are red and his teeth shone as he sang
aloud.
“Come and see, man of good will, live in peace again.
Peace on earth, can it be,” the Little White Dragon sings
out loud.
“What is this?” Kenneth whispers. “A dragon, singing a

Christmas carol?”
There beside the Little White Dragon stands a little man
wearing a light blue foolscap on his head. He has white
wings like an angel. His body is like a lion with claws for
nails. His face is pale white with deep blue eyes and he has
tiny blue lips. He is smaller than the Little White Dragon,
but they both stand strong beside each other.
As Kenneth stands in awe about the Little White
Dragon, he twirls around towards Kenneth to state, “I
knew your father! He was brave, strong and good willed.”
With a puzzled expression on Kenneth’s face, the
dragon continues. “I knew your father.” In a small
whispered voice, he says, “Don’t you know who I am?”
Kenneth answers, “No.”
The dragon continues, “Come and see.”
Kenneth began to take a step forward when his mother
grabs him from behind, pulling him down the stairway.
Kenneth feels his feet dragging against the steps below.
Kenneth’s heart races in a panic! His thoughts are
scattered. All this time the answer was within his reach.
“No!” screams Kenneth. “Let me go.” He is crying as he
struggles with his mother. Kenneth pulls away from her
but her strength overcomes him. She drags Kenneth out
of the room, the room he had found for the very first time.
Kenneth cries, “Why are you doing this, Momma?”
That night she gives Kenneth no answers but only says
to him “There will come a day when the truth will reveal
itself but until then, just trust me, my son.”

She tucks Kenneth in bed leaving him with a gentle kiss
on his cheek and closes the door behind her. Kenneth
puts his head against a soft feather pillow. The voice he
heard repeated in his head was from the Little White
Dragon. “I knew your father.” Who was this dragon? Where
did he come from? Why did my mother leave that room
unlocked? What was his mother hiding from him? She
must have known something about his father. He was
sure of this now. Kenneth’s eyes grow heavy as he starts
to fall in a deep sleep when a gentle wind blows, carrying
an approaching voice.
“I knew your father. He was brave, strong and good
willed.” Kenneth opens his eyes, sitting up from his bed
quickly. There is a light shining beneath the door.
A whispered voice speaks again, “Come and see!”
Kenneth speaks out, “Do you wish to harm me?”
Kenneth anxiously waits to hear from the voice again,
but there was silence.
“Do you wish to harm me?” Kenneth says for the second
time.
“Come and see the journey that will lead you to your
father,” replies the Little White Dragon.
In a burst of excitement, Kenneth leaps off his bed and
rushes towards the door. When Kenneth opens the door,
there is no one there. He looks down the hall and sees no
movement in either direction.
“Is anyone there?” Kenneth says.
No answer, only his mother’s voice from a distance.

“Go to bed, Kenneth!”
Disappointed, Kenneth turns and goes back into his
room, slamming the door behind him.
As Kenneth slept in his bed that night, the Little White
Dragon appears over the headboard of his bed looking
down at Kenneth as he sleeps. Beside him is Gueydan, the
little man Kenneth saw on the stairway.
The Little White Dragon turned to Gueydan and utters,
“I shall give him a challenge. Should he pass it I will deliver
the path leading to the truth of his father.”
Gueydan responds, “The boy is brave like his father but
faint in heart. The challenge is too much for him!”
Annoyed with Gueydan the Little White Dragon
declares, “Then you shall guide him with the gift of a
whispered voice. Only the desire shall be his to find. On
the morrow when the boy is by the riverside, when he sits
to fish, then you shall begin to lead him with the
whispered voice I have given to you.”
Gueydan is frustrated and in disbelief. “I know he shall
fall at the hands of the Stinky Black Wizard.”
With sudden arm gesture from the Little White Dragon,
he says, “Enough, it has been said. You will go to the boy
at the riverside where he fishes. There you shall give him
the whispered voice of knowledge.”
“What of the boy’s mother?” replies Gueydan.
I shall deal with her on the morrow, leave it to me,” says
the Little White Dragon.

Gueydan draws close to Kenneth’s ear and whispers,
“On the morrow you will go fishing by the riverside.”
