Giving a new twist on rhyming - Recess Rhymes a remarkable poetry book that uniquely provides humor to the sensitivities and struggles that kids face in their growing years.

Appropriate reading for young children, ages 7 -12 years old, many adults find they are reminiscing on their childhood mischief as they read the stories. The book contains many funny incidents in school, strange daydreams, and the tale of a bully who is not so tough.
The poems are humorous, witty and show the great imagination kids an have. The stories about siblings told from a young perspective, as embarrassing situations are cleverly solved. The book cover emotions of children at school, with their pets, and feelings generated as friendships grow. Several poems written as mini stories tell of how the children interact during activities shared.

I get to school by riding the bus
I got on today and sat next to Gus.
He’s a mean little guy
I took a seat and looked him in the eye
Gus doesn’t always tell the truth
If you say anything he’ll knock out your tooth
I crouched over near the window with my feet together
Looking out at the weather
Kids are pointing and looking at me
Because I’m the kid next to Gus you see
I can tell this is not my day
Gus is already sliding closer this way
My heart is pounding as I clench my fist
I know today I’m not taking this
I asked Gus “Can you scoot over?”
He pushes up his shoulder even closer
Gus whispers to me “Can we switch seats?”
Then he said “There is a bug by my feet!!”
I grabbed his jacket
So I could Whack it!
He patted me on the back
Then he said “You helped Gus”
Everyone Cheered
Now he is friends with all of us.

Professional Reviews

Sarah Keyton - Mathematics Teacher, Georgia
Recess Rhymes are poems of real life situations and feelings of children. This is a way to let them know that someone else has the same feelings and thoughts. The poems have a rhythm that makes you want to read them again and read them with your friends.

Bernice Sloan - 5th grade teacher, Triangle Elementary School
School-age adolescence will relate to and recognize the straightforward depiction of their daily occurences articulated rhythmically.
