Sample Parenting Clauses

Reader, some of the clauses in this appendix may seem unnecessary, and perhaps even silly, superfluous, or downright stupid. I agree. I didn't invent this stuff. Should this be necessary? No; but, if you bought this book, or wish that your children's other parent had, then it may not be a bad idea to consider adding some of these clauses into any written agreements that involve the parenting of your children. Look and see if there are any particular clauses that the other parent would be guilty of having violated so far. How about you? No, never!

1. CIVIL TREATMENT: All conversations, interactions, and dealings of any sort between us shall be conducted in a civil and courteous manner. (This one is my favorite!)

2. DISCUSSION WITH CHILDREN: Neither of us will discuss the legal aspects of our separation, potential litigation, or other adult issues with or in front of our children or permit third persons to do so. (Happens all the time!)

3. NO DISPARAGEMENT: We will not disparage each other or other family members in front of our children or permit third persons to do so. Our children shall not be encouraged or permitted to call non-parents "mother," father," or their equivalents. (Happens more than you might think!)

Professional Reviews

Easy Reading for a tough situation
Mr. Mastracci's book effectively addresses all of a parent's concerns regarding child custody. It covers everything from setting a visitation schedule to planning out holidays, all with the child's best interest at heart.

This is the first book I've come across that truly takes a realistic look at the challenges of raising a child after the parents have separated. I would recommend this to anyone who is facing a hostile or bitter custody battle. It will help keep things in perspective.

From Personal and Professional Viewpoints
By Dr. Caron B. Goode "Inspired Parenting Coach" (Fort Worth, Texas)

I just finished this excellent book which the Academy for Coaching Parents International ([...]) will be using for a specialty course: Coaching Co-Parenting for Separated and Divorced Parents. The author writes from personal experieces and professional viewpoints about making the divorce process easiest for parents. First and foremost, he reminds the reader that divorce only changes relationships, it doesn't end them, AND the child is always the priority. He offers practical solutions to scheduling, transportation issues, money and support and litigation processes.

He tells common sense truths: work out your issues before you come to court. You do not really want a judge telling you how to live your lives for the rest of your lives. Keep your emotions in check or you could be seen as unstable. Manage your stress during the process because it will eat you before you are aware that it happened. The author also is very clear on what not to do to your kids...like make them be the go-between and messenger. Get the idea?? Buy the book, one of the best I've seen yet.

Tina Nocera - Founder, Parental Wisdom
Finally, a book that offers practical advice on how to deal with the real challenges parents face with divorce conflicts.

Now if only we can get parents to read it, and put it into practice, their children would be so much better off.

The day to day bickering may not completely go away, but as you read this book, you realize how futile and hurtful it is to the kids.

Get this book for friends and family going through these difficult times.
