I loved theatre design in my younger days and was quite
skilled at creating an illusion. I think painting creates a
similar illusion. This kind of art invites people to believe that
what you are communicating could be real.
I collect pictures of my grandchildren, friends’ children,
dogs and cats, house gardens, country villages, wildlife and
anything that is interesting. My daughter takes most of the
photographs I use specifically for this purpose. I look
through them until they suggest something to me and an
idea is born.
It is a good idea to collect as much as you can and keep
anything you find interesting. Try taking a camera with you
when you go out and take photos of things you find
interesting, like flowers or trees, buildings, doorways etc.
chose to begin with Áine who is four years old. Her name is
an ancient Irish name.
I cut a sheet of Fabriano Artistico water color paper (140lbs)
(300gm), which is a hot press paper, to A3. Always use good
quality paper. It is false economy to buy anything but the
good brands. It affects the flow of water and paint. With
lower quality paper you may find yourself with problems
while you are painting that are hard to fix. If you end up
having to start again several times it can become as costly
as buying the better papers and ends up taking more time
than necessary.
