Mackinac

Chapter One

Mackinac Island – August 1895

Pressing against the bow rail of the Algomah, twenty-year-old Victoria Whitmore held her straw hat in place over neatly coiled dark hair. The ferry’s engine vibrated gently beneath her feet, pulsing through her as though she were a part of the vessel. Amidships, black clouds of coal smoke from the tall stack spiced the air.

Victoria stood in a throng of passengers… She gazed in the direction of Mackinac Island …

…Above the shoreline’s collection of mismatched structures, the hotel stood like a proud queen on the throne of a grassy hill. Her long rows of windows looked out over the comings and goings of the harbor below. Victoria trembled with nervous anticipation at the thought of demanding payment from the hotel manager of his long overdue account with her father’s furniture factory …

“Sorry I’m late, Miss Whitmore. Rand Bartlett.” He extended his hand.

His steady grip caused her heartbeat to quicken. The dancing lights in his hazel eyes seemed to take in everything at once…

She cleared her throat and extracted her hand from his, attempting to regain some distance and to dispel the tingling sensation that had set her nerves dancing…
