A
ll Janae remembered was doing 65mph in a 35 zone, swerving in and out of lanes, trying to hurry and catch him. Finally, after all these years, she’d managed to get his ass right where she wanted him. And this time it was going to take an act of God to save him from her wrath. However, she was so dead set on getting her revenge that she failed to notice the stoplight she was about to run. And that’s when it happened. BAMMMMM. Everything turned black.
When she came to, her entire body was cold and numb. Her vision settled on a unfamiliar face looking down on her. Not long after fully regaining consciousness, and awareness, the numbness left and she was met by a heartrending pain that pulsated through her. Glancing around, Janae noticed she wasn’t in her car anymore. Out of instinct, she tried to sit up to see what was going on, but her movement was restricted. Panic seized her, as she tried to grab things.
The EMS tried to calm her down. “Ma’am…Ma’am,” one called out. “Your neck and back is broken, ma’am. You can’t move. Just calm down, please.”
“What are you talking about?” Janae screamed hysterically through the oxygen mask.
“Ma’am, you broke your neck and back in the collision. I’d say you’re lucky just to be alive,” the EMS told her.
“What about my kids?” she cried tears streaming down her face. “My babies!”
“I’m sorry ma’am, but no one in the car survived but you,” the EMS replied sorrowfully.
“Oh my god! Oh my god! Lord please, please don’t let this be happening!” she cried. “Lord please. I’m sorry. Please.”
In an attempt to calm her down, the paramedic opened up the I.V value to increase her morphine dosage. Janae felt her pain and her word slowly beginning to fade and so was her vision, but the sound of the sirens didn’t. In fact, they seemed to grow louder and louder with every second that passed. The consistent ringing sound echoed, Janae jolted up in her bed. Her heart racing, tears flowing down her cheeks, she felt for her neck, then arms and legs to make sure she had usage. It was just a dream.
Realizing that the ringing sound she was hearing was her cell, she swiftly snatched it off its charger, panting hard into the receiver. “Hello!” she answered gruffly.
“Hey baby girl,” the voice on the other end said.
Janae was so shook up by her dream; she didn’t recognize the voice of the caller at first.
“Who is this?” she asked.
“What? It’s me, Jay! Who the hell else would be calling you baby girl?”
That’s when she looked over and saw that he wasn’t in the bed with her. She ignored his question, then asked one of her own. “Where are you?”
“I’m at the Gentlemen’s Club with Miles and Derrick. Don’t you remember me leaving?”
It took a moment before it came back to her. “Yeah, I guess.”
“What’s wrong with you?” he asked.
There was a brief pause on the line. “Nothing,” she lied.
Figuring she was lying but not wanting to go back and forth with her Jay said, “Well forget about whatever that nothing is. I got something that’ll cheer you up.”
“Like what?” she murmured.
“You’re not gonna believe who’s up in the club right now?”
“Who?” She sighed.
“I’ll give you a clue. You’ve been waiting on this dudes’ money for awhile now.”
“What!” Sleep left Janae completely. “You joking, right?”
“Nah, I’m looking right at dude as we speak.”
“Don’t play with me Jay!”
“I ain’t playing. I’m looking right at dude,” Jay assured her.
Revenge simmered in Janae’s veins. “Who is he with?”
“He’s here with two other dudes far as I can see, and those cats are having a ball. One of them is on stage as we speak letting a few of the strippers have their way with him, the other one, he around here somewhere. But your dude, he’s just sitting at the bar, sipping on a bottled water like he’s been all night. Which is crazy as hell, because dude been dishing out plenty of paper to his boys all night?”
An evil smirk fell across Janae’s face. “Keep his black ass right there, I’m sending the police over there to pick his ass up right now!”
“How the hell am I supposed to make a grown man stay somewhere?” Jay complained. “Did you not hear me when I said it’s three of them? Besides, even if they do arrest him, I’m sure ol’ boy’ll be out before sunrise.”
“I don’t give a damn, don’t let him out of your sight, and don’t let them leave.”
“Whatever man,” Jay said, hating now, that he’d called her.
“Jay, if you let him leave that club before the police get there, ooh wee, I swear you’ll never so much as smell this pussy again.” Janae hung up before Jay could respond and called the police. “I got your sneaky ass now. Left my babies in tears while you and your new family living all happy,” she mumbled angrily dialing the number to the police station.
To Janae’s great disappointment, she couldn’t get the police to do a thing, no matter how hard she tried. “Ma’am unless a crime is in the process or has been committed… I’m sorry, there’s nothing we can do,” the officer said.
She even insisted they check to see if his warrant was still valid.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry but I’m not allowed to give you such information,” the officer said with aggravation.
Furiously, Janae clicked the phone off and threw it across the room. Since they don’t wanna do their damn job, I’ll just have to take matters in my own hands. That bastard thinks he can just move on with his life, then give his bastard kids the life that my daughters deserves. I’ll be damned. Tasha and Shay might not be his, but he was the only daddy they knew. Janae had read about her ex-husband getting remarried, having kids, and his new found success, which all made her beyond jealous.
Me and mine were in his life before all that shit and he just up and abandon my babies as if they were a foreclosed house and think I’m gonna let him get away with it. Clearly after four years of marriage that son of a bitch still don’t know who he dealing with. His ass better Google me, because I ain’t the one to play with, she hissed. And that bitch of his… I’mma make sure she knows that her ass will always be second to me.
She glanced at the clock illuminating on the nightstand. It was twenty pass three that May morning. She considered going up to the club and confronting him, but quickly dismissed that, simply because they only had one car and Jay was at the club with it. Frustrated and restless, she got up, grabbed her ashtray containing her cigarettes, and lighter off the dresser.
Taking a single one out the pack, she lit and took a long drag as she moved swiftly towards the kitchen to fix herself a drink. After making a vodka and grapefruit, she flopped down on their old, beat up, brown sofa sipping her drink and smoking her cigarette.
