The Wishing Book
John Carter aged 9, finds a small book under some floorboards in his bedroom. He learns that this is a special book, written by a man 69 years earlier, that has powers to grant wishes.Following a few pranks to try the book out, John and his sister and friends decide to wish for a visit to Planet Mars. This is where the action picks up as the Chief Highness of Mars wants the book for himself so that he can rule the universe. With many twists and thrills the children are in danger and fear they will never be able to return to Earth. This is an edge of the seat book that will keep the reader gripped until the end of the book.

The Wishing Book, 18 Jun 2009
By Editor Viv (UK) - See all my reviews

Back in 1940 on the Island of Tenerife, a young child is supernaturally given words for special book which made wishes come true. His family are very poor and so he wishes for riches and great wealth which are granted.
Many years later, the High Chief of Planet Mars, discovers the existence of the wishing book and wants it for himself so that he can become the ruler of the whole universe. He sends a Martian warrior to find the book and bring it back to Mars, but the warrior keeps the book and uses the book for his own selfish ends and never returns to Mars.
Many years later, little John Carter aged 9, finds this book hidden under a floorboard in his bedroom. He tells his twin sister Penny and close friend Jimmy and together they have many exciting adventures and play pranks with the book.
The children find themselves on Planet Mars. This is where the action picks up. They face betrayal and terror as they encounter Martian warriors and flying creatures intent on getting the book off them. When the children lose the Wishing Book all hope of returning to Planet Earth is dashed. The Martians are intent on terminating them. Will they succeed?
This is an edge of the seat book that will keep the reader gripped right until the end. With the many twists, it is impossible to know what will happen to them and who they can trust.

What a great book, not only for kids but adults too! Easy to read and thoroughly gripping! Once you start this book you won't be able to put it down til you've finished it!
Can't wait for The Wishing Book 2 - Return to Mars.

Reader Reviews for "The Wishing Book"

Reviewed by Annette Day 1/9/2010
Another good read by Grahame Howard, the first in a series of books for children, 'The Wishing Book' kept my grand-daughter enthralled from beginning to end. It captures the imagination of young and old alike with adventure and suspense, following the story of four children and The Wishing Book on Earth and the planet Mars - with so many twists and turns who can the children trust?
'The Wishing Book 2 - Return to Mars' has now been released and they are both a great read.
