Most young children have a desire to own a pet. However, many are unable to do so since their parents would prefer not to have pets at home. Some may hold the view that their children are not mature enough to care for them. I believe the majority of young children will identify with the main character, Levi, who desperately wants to own and take care of a stray dog. Levi has a special relationship with his dog, Patch, who is hidden from the family. The joy Levi demonstrates after the family agrees to keep the dog, reiterates the big emotions children experience when they are allowed to own and care for a pet. These evident universal themes will make this story a favored one.
Most young children have a desire to own a pet. However, many are unable to do so since their parents would prefer not to have any pets at home. Some may hold the view that their children are not mature enough to care for them. But Levi has his own perception about having a pet.
In this story, he stumbles on a stray dog on his way home after school. Filled with elation, he picks up the dog and makes an attempt to take it home. Alas! He remembers the rule at home. NO PETS ALLOWED!
Charged with excitement and the moral responsibility to keep the dog safe, he runs to the abandoned house at the end of the street. He keeps the dog there and makes secret visits.
One day after school, he goes to visit and finds the dog missing. Feeling dejected and remorseful, he decides to tell his parents, but only after a long search. To his dismay and relief, he discovers the dog has made itself at home - in their house. And to make matters worse, Levi's dad has plotted with his mother to keep the dog's presence a secret until Levi informs them that he has been looking after a stray animal. It is important for them to find out if and when he'll tell them.
All's well that ends well. Indeed! Levi owns up and his parents agree to let him keep the dog. His honesty had rewarded him. But his parents make him an ultimatum. Levi can only keep the dog on one condition. He promises to never, ever keep secrets from his parents again. Never, ever!
