Fact: No animal in its natural habitat gets fat. Fact: Obesity is also noticeably absent in primitive human cultures. Fact: The only animals to become overweight on this planet are 'civilised' Man - and his pets.
This is highly significant.
We do not get fat because we eat too much (although many do). If that were the cause, other species with an ample food supply would also get fat - yet they don't. The way to lose weight is firstly to eat as much energy as your body needs, and secondly to eat foods that we, as a species, have evolved and are genetically programmed to eat.

The extensive research carried out over many decades to answer the question of why some people, eating little, get fat and others remain thin no matter how much they eat, has concentrated on the simplistic idea that people get fat because they eat too much. It is, of course, true that if you become overweight it is because you have consumed more energy than you have used. It is the truth but it is not 'the whole truth and nothing but the truth'. There is much more to it than that. What happens to food and how the body regulates its energy expenditure is more important yet largely ignored. This has led in the main to the research being concentrated on trying to answer the wrong questions and it is no real surprise that it cannot find the right answers. In the meantime, the fatter person is made out to be a glutton and is ridiculed by society.
It was suggested as long ago as 1961 that people who eat less tend to be fatter than those who eat more and is has been confirmed in several other studies since. A study conducted in 1991 by Dr. Valerie George and co-workers at the Physical Activity Science Laboratory, Laval University, Quebec, compared women who were 'small eaters' and others who were 'large eaters'. They found that although subjects classed as small eaters ate, on average, less than 1,500 calories per day, they had an average thirty-three percent body fat, whereas the large eaters eating around 2,400 calories per day, weighed significantly less and averaged only twenty-two percent body fat. It seems that low-calorie slimming diets could actually be the cause of weight gain. Why should this be?
In the last chapter we looked at one reason that we become overweight by eating the wrong food. This may, however, be coupled with another reason: overweight may also be caused by a malfunction of one or more of your body's energy-regulating organs brought about, in most cases, by protracted periods of eating less than your body needs.
