Johnny Wong flet great pride, once he'd finished the purchase of Tensas Plantationn, but even as he left the courthose the sheriff was telling the clerk that Johnny, like most Asians, was a nice, peaceful person, the money Johnny paid for the great plantation was tainted, and was sent to him by his brother, Joe Lee, the President's fund raiser.
But Johnny soon learned the delta people were not his enemies, but even as he bought his new Caddy and a giant whirl wind plowed down Delta City's main street, and he heard the ghastly purring of the whippoorwills, that he knew something was amiss. Johnny is haunted by the fear of the black people, as he drives across the delta, fearing that they had somehow learned about the night Odette, the lovely, sixteen year-old Creole girl came to him in the hay barn, knowing he took refuge from the storm. Although he heard only Mississippi delta blues on his radio, no matter what station he turned on, nothing happened to him - until he moved into Tensas ante bellum mansion. First, a beautiful, cheap small Chinese dolll, the kind poor farm folk bought for their daughters at Chrsitmas, but then the doll changed into a" thing" - a thing that waned to kill him. Several fearful happenings came down on Johnny. He met Odette at Ray's Breeding barn and rescued her fro her uncle who wanted to take her to New Orleans to become a prostitute, and with Odette safely hidden, Johnny is visited by the Voo-doo queen, who promises to teach Odette how to make love, and demonstrates (with Johnny) how she will do it.Then, the "thing" grows stronger, meaner. Johnny and Odette fight their way out of the mansion, and escape. But en route to El Dorado, the "thing" invades the Caddy, and Johnny sets fire to the car, hoping to kill the thing. He follows Odette back to the highway. She catheces a ride with a truck driver, leaving Johnny behind to fight off the "thing" Johnny is rescued by a strange, but beautiful girl, and they are forced to fight off the "thing" in a frightening, running battle.
