Excerpt
Standing on the edge of the stage, he slowly removed his t-shirt. He stood bare-chested and vulnerable to the hungry eyes that admired his masculine physique. Patrick took pride in his appearance and went to the gym regularly to keep fit. He took the shirt and swung it over his head. The women close to the stage reached up with their hands. Patrick surveyed the crowd and noticed one woman in particular who was sitting next to a dark-haired beauty. The blonde wasnít going crazy like the other hormonal women. She stood out among the crowd, completely composed and utterly sexy. He couldnít take his gaze off her. Aiming straight for the lady in red, he threw his sweaty shirt in her direction and watched as she caught it. A huge smile of surprise spread across her glowing face.

When Allison accompanies her friend to a club for Valentineís Day, she hopes to find someone but doesn't really count on it. When she meets Patrick, the attraction is instant but she loses him due to a small riot. When a fire breaks out, Allison does everything she can think of to find Patrick but will she be able to find him in a city full of men?

Don't you know that an eyebrow went up when I read Patrick's side job to get through law school? And my next immediate thought was, "Oh this is gonna be good!" For the Love of Patrick was incredibly funny and highlighted on what it's REALLY like out there today. Appearances are deceiving. I loved the end of this story and really had fun reading it. This was a quick, lighthearted and humorous read that you don't want to miss. Ms. Shannon wrote in a way that I can identify with. I have never read her work before and look forward to reading many more. For the Love of Patrick was just the right length of book to read to get a quick fix. There was so much story for so few pages. To Ms. Shannon I would like to say, "Way to go with this story and thank you so much for making me laugh."

Alison Stewart decides to head out to a posh nightclub with her girlfriend Kim to have some fun at a Valentineís Day bash for singles. Since it was a year since her breakup with Derek, Kim feels that itís time for Alison to move on with her life. This club is going to have plenty of nice eligible bachelors and maybe Alison might find Mr. Right among them.

While heading to the club, Kim explains that she heard if a bachelor is interested, heíll place a rose on that girlís table. Alisonís thoughts seem to drift away onto other things while her friend is talking to her. She wonders if she should even be there.

Once at the club, the music blares and the party begins. Bachelors start pouring out on the stage claiming the girl that most catches his eye. One of the last guys to come out definitely catches Alisonís attention. As he approaches her table to place a rose on it, a riot breaks out and the club is evacuated. They are both ushered out two different doors and all she knows is his name is Patrick.

Patrick Stevens canít believe his luck. Once of the girls definitely caught his eye, but then the riot broke out and they didnít even get to talk to each other. From that night on, he just canít seem to get her out of his mind.

Alison keeps wondering how she could possibly find Patrick in such a big city. Going back to the club the next day, she spoke with a man talking to a firefighter on the scene. She finds out that someone was smoking in the club last night and a fire broke out during the riot. The club is going to be closed now for two weeks. The man suggests she contact the manager and maybe heíll get her in touch with Patrick. When she calls, her hopes are dashed when it goes directly to voicemail. Now she becomes even more determined to find this guy.

Drastic situations call for drastic measures so Alison decides to place an ad in the local newspaper looking for sexy Patrick. Hopefully, he or someone else that knows him will see the ad. She sets a date and place for Patrick to meet her.

Does Patrick or one of his friends see the ad Alison placed in the newspaper? What happens on the day that she hopes Patrick will be at the meeting place waiting for her?

I really enjoyed this short story by Ms. Rouchelle. I loved the creative storyline and I walked away feeling as if I knew her characters personally. I loved how Alison had placed an ad in the local newspaper and I had hoped that Patrick or one of his friends saw the ad. I couldnít wait to find out what happened at the end of the story because I really wanted this to end happily for the both of them. Iím new to Ms. Rouchelleís writing and I look forward to reading more from her in the near future.

J. Thomas The Long and Short Of It Reviews

Up front I have to say that what makes this story different is Patrick. He's a beefcake performer at a women's singles club. Alison goes there, at the behest of a friend, with Valentine's Day hopes. Both protagonists are vulnerable from having previously lost at love. Both are longing, but gun-shy--uncertain about the future. There's this priceless moment in the story when the two connect by sight, from a distance; they see something special, they know it could be right, they manage to just touch, then pandemonium sweeps them apart.

What to do? From here, the story is about the two trying to find each other after that first spark of infatuation has ignited, but not had a chance to coalesce into something meaningful. These are incipient lovers stranded in a twilight zone of uncertainty, doubt, and a kind of embarrassed eagerness. So much energy, so much fire over what might be.

The strength of this story is its prose. It's like skating on smooth, virgin ice--an effortless glide, and the story's a pleasure to read in one sitting. If the writing has a weakness, it's the dialogue. The discussions between friends seem a bit formal. The weakness of the story is really its brevity. It does not allow the relationship to get beyond its initial chemistry. The ending is satisfying but compressed, leaving us wanting more. Perhaps Ms. Rouchelle will provide us a sequel.
