Manipulation, mayhem and murder make Righteous Revenge a mystery with a twist.
Twin sisters, separated by distance and life-style choices are reunited by the unexpected brutal murder of their parents and only brother, Matt. Righteous Revenge, situated in Des Moines, Iowa explores the relationship between serene unpretentious Bethany and sexy glamorous Andrea as each seeks her own technique for dealing with the tragedy. While Bethany immerses herself in her Angel store, Andrea delves into the forbidden. For a time Police consider inherited wealth the obvious motive for murder but confirmation of the twins alibis keep them from jail. An attempt on Bethany’s life that results in another death intensifies the plot, further mystifying the police. While sharing grief and spending time at the bedside of their comatose younger sister, the twins struggle to revive their former bond. Will the twins budding alliance, sabotaged when one twin marries the other’s fiancée, manage to survive? Will authorities expose the murderer before another death occurs?
At first he was just a vague impression, just movement and reflection until he materialized quietly out of the shadow and into the meager overhead light. His steps were slow, guarded and wary. Guessing the man’s age was impossible. He moved with a halting gait, looking around furtively with each step he took closer to Adam. He jumped nearly a foot when Adam stepped out of the shadows to confront him and would have hastily evaporated back into the night if Adam hadn’t clutched at the material of his sleeve to restrain him.
“Leave me alone,” the stranger said his voice a harsh hiss in the vacuum of darkness that surrounded them.
Adam drew him into the meager circle of light. “I just want to talk to you, please. I will not harm you I promise but I must ask you some questions.” Adam watched the man’s eyes dart from him to the floor and back up at him weighing Adam’s intent. Terror nested in the stranger’s expression but Adam held firm and quietly waited for the man to calm and accept that he was safe. His clothes were badly wrinkled, the creases ironed in by the body that slept in them, his hair hung in uncombed strands down below his shoulders and his unshaved face was over powered by dark fear-filled eyes that glared at Adam as if he were the devil himself.
The stranger kept trying to pull free of Adam’s grip. It was obvious that he would bolt the moment Adam released him. “I just want to talk to you about the young lady that owns the Angel store.” Adam sensed the dissipation of tension in the arm he clutched. “Do you know Bethany?” Adam waited, watched the rumpled indigent gnaw at his lip.
“Who’s asking,” he mumbled, training his eyes on Adam. “You a cop or something.”
“I’m her friend and her lawyer. Police arrested her this afternoon.”
Midwest Book Review - murder, mystery, miracles, love, May 8, 2003
Reviewer: L.A. Johnson (see more about me) from Nebraska USA
The back cover dubs this author as "word wizard" and she is that alright. This book was well written and engrossing from page one, complete with murders, mystery, miracles and love. I could barely stand to put it down.
Bethany Bridgewater is an independent woman, calm, capable and centered. Her engagement to Brad Quinn is not the joyous time it should be. Neither Brad nor her parents approve of Bethany's angel store. Brad is a gloriously handsome devil, but his desire for the reluctant Bethany is brushed off at every turn. His touch does nothing for her. When Bethany's family is murdered, it is not Brad who stands by to lend moral support, but Adam Addison her father's lawyer. Adam has long been hopelessly enamored of Bethany but has kept those feelings private.
Bethany's twin Andrea has always believed herself to be the black sheep of the family. Andrea is stylish, flamboyant, and flaunts her beauty for all to see and appreciate. Her career as an "actress" in LA is not exactly something to be proud of. When Andrea returns home for her family's funeral, she and Brad are drawn together like magnets.
The murderer remains hidden from readers, but we get a glimpse into his or her troubled mind through thoughts. The author handles this part well and builds suspense effectively by interspersing the killer's thoughts with action and dialog. Both Bethany and Andrea are in danger, as well as their ten year old sister Courtney. Courtney survived a bullet to her brain, but lingers in a coma. I was not prepared for the miracles, or for the shocking ending. Ms. Scott took me by surprise.
If you like mystery, suspense, love, and a well crafted story, read this book The author has a new book out that I am eager to read. There is some sexual content in Righteous Revenge, so it is not appropriate for the young or immature. Otherwise I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a hearty read.

|Beverly J. Scott has written an exciting, "nail-biting," suspenseful mystery that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Skillfully, the narrative moves along with identifiable and realistic characters and authentic dialog. A poetic and sensitive narrative gives readers relief between the ever grim developments within the plot. And just when the reader is ready to breathe a sigh of relief, there is an unsuspected twist to boggle his thinking. A great read, a real page turner!|
