The Novel Chest
This is the first installment of a three part series evolving around Alex Avery, a young lady entering into womanhood. This story delves into her life, love lessons and triumph in becoming a strong, successful African American woman in today's world. Following Alex while she explores her sexuality, defines her character and finds love in this tale of lust, betrayal, love and finally finding happiness within.
Time passed as the girls partied, danced and drank themselves into oblivion. Journey and Alex were feeling high and had finally pried themselves off of the dance floor, and back upstairs to VIP as Romeo and Sway approached them.
“I see you ladies are having a good time,” Romeo said seating himself next to Journey on the sofa.
“Yeah, we are,” Journey responded breathless, “Romeo can you order me a glass of water, please. My mouth is so dry.”
“Uh, no Romeo, I’ll get it,” Sway interjected before Romeo could stand up.
“You want to take a walk over to the bar with me?” he asked looking at Alex.
She smiled and stood up. This was her opportunity to finally touch bases with Sway in an attempt to get on a more personal level. The burning question on Alex’s mind was whether or not he was in a relationship with someone. They walked together side by side, raising eyebrows and initiating whispers as they passed by the women who were swooning over Sway earlier that night. Alex knew the women were wondering who the hell she was, and she loved the attention and the glares she was receiving from Sway’s fan club. It also allowed her to relive a time in her life when she was considered the ‘it’ girl.
“You look really good tonight,” Sway complimented Alex as they sat at the bar on stools that were facing out toward the crowd.
“Thank you. You are looking extra fine tonight yourself. Almost good enough to eat,” Alex’s intoxication left her totally uninhibited. She had no problem freely saying what was on her mind.
Sway looked at her out of the corner of his eye to see if she realized what she had just said. He chuckled and smiled and told her thank you. He ordered their drinks and looked over at Alex.
“So, what’s up? I thought you and my boy were tryin’ to get to know one another?”
“We did,” Alex said looking at Sway wondering what Romeo told him, “we went out the other night but then he brought me home and met Journey. And, well I guess that’s all I have to say. Here I am with you and he’s with her. It’s all good though because I could only see Romeo and me as friends.”
“Good to know,” Sway said handing Alex her drink, “don’t move, let me bring your girl her water.” As he stood up from the stool, he looked into Alex’s glassy eyes and said, “But I wanna finish talkin’ to you.”
Sway began moving through the crowd towards where Journey and Romeo were sitting. Alex could not help but to watch him walk. She was happy that he broke the ice; she did not want to have to come out of herself and become aggressive to attain his attention. She sat at the bar as Sway had instructed and waited for him to return.
“So, Miss Alex,” Sway said coming back and sitting beside her, “tell me about yourself, I mean besides you being beautiful, smart and independent.”
Alex looked at Sway and could not take her eyes off of his smooth lips and straight, white teeth. She wanted to kiss him.
“What is there to know? I’m from Connecticut, graduated this past spring from NYU, no kids, two jobs and I live with my girl.”
“From Connecticut, huh? Does that make you one of those snobby, uppity bitches who like to come here to shop but think they are too good to stop and talk to a brotha’ on the street.”
“Well first of all, I’m not a bitch of any kind and I would really appreciate it if you never use that term for women around me again,” Alex said wondering if Sway was really worth pursuing.
For a moment she thought she would have been better off sticking with Romeo. But the animalistic, sexual chemistry between she and Sway was undeniable and if she hadn’t had any respect for herself, she would have taken Sway into one of the “private session” rooms in the back and fucked his brains out.
“Hold up, sweety I’m sorry, I was not implying that you are a bitch and it came out wrong, I apologize,” he said picking her hand up from the bar and kissing each finger tip lightly.
Alex thought she had pissed on herself, but it was just her moistening to his soft touch.
“Accept my apology, please,” Sway said staring deeply into Alex’s glassy eyes.
“Apology accepted,” Alex said softly still allowing Sway to hold on to her hand.
She could feel the burning stares from the women who wished they were in her position.
“So, now that you know about me, let’s hear your story.”
“You know my story,” he said looking at her smiling as if to say, “Romeo told me you were asking about me.”
“I only know some of your story,” she blushed, “I want to know everything.”
“Well, for starters, I’m single, thirty-four, one kid, got my own place, and have a few business prospects in the works. You can definitely call me a workaholic.”
“That makes two of us. Why do they call you Sway?”
“My real name is Steven, Steven McCoy. People call me Sway ‘cause I like to go with the flow,” he said seductively holding Alex’s hand in his palm.
“You know what, let’s get out of here.”
“What?” Alex said pulling her hand from his grasp, “I can’t just up and leave my girl here. She don’t know nobody and how will she get home?”
Sway reached for Alex’s hand and held it tightly between his massive hands, “Romeo will bring her home. I want you to come with me.”
“Sway, where do you think you are taking me three o’clock in the morning? I don’t fuck on the first date,” Alex said bluntly keeping up her guard.
She knew that she would gladly let Sway hit it on any other day but tonight she had to maintain her self-respect. She convinced herself at that moment that she would have to be in control of whatever would transpire between she and Sway; otherwise, she would be reliving the pain that she endured over three years ago. Sway laughed at her statement not letting her ignorance deter him from getting to know her better. Romeo apparently hadn’t schooled Alex on Sway’s long list of women who were waiting in the wings for Sway’s beckon call. The truth was that any one of the women who were watching him and Alex, would go home with Sway at the drop of a dime.
“Naw baby, it ain’t even like that. I’m not tryin’ to hit it – tonight. I just want to go someplace quiet so we can talk.”
“Ok, but no funny business. You know I have been drinking all night and I am feeling a little vulnerable. Don’t take advantage of this situation,” Alex said sliding down from the barstool.
They walked over to Romeo and Journey who were heavily involved in a conversation that required their noses to almost touch. Alex could tell that Romeo had ignited a fire in Journey. Journey was enthralled in their conversation and would not take her eyes off of Romeo.
“Yo man, we out,” Sway said disrupting their canoodling.
“Aaight!” Romeo said giving Sway some dap, “don’t worry, I’ll take your girl home.”
“You sure?” Alex said to Romeo but looked at Journey.
“Yeah it’s ok. He can take me home,” Journey said smiling devilishly with bloodshot eyes.
Unlike Alex, Journey had no qualms about giving it up on a first date if that is what she felt like doing at the time. Journey held no regrets and didn’t care what people thought of her as long as she did what she wanted to do. Sway and Alex left the club arm and arm causing much speculation. Once outside he walked her over to a clean shiny white Ford Explorer sitting on chromed out twenty-inch rims.
“How many cars do you own?” Alex said getting into the Explorer and remembering that he had dropped her off to work the other day in a Legend.
“Five, one for everyday of the week,” Sway said adjusting himself in the driver seat and starting the engine.
“But there are seven days in a week.”
“I know. I drive my Corvette Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”
“It’s pretty hard to believe that you are not taken, with all of your success. Are you sure you don’t have some lonely woman at home waiting for you to come home to her?”
“What girl?” Sway said laughing, “look I told you I don’t have a woman. Don’t get me wrong, I have female friends but none of them can call themselves my ‘woman’.”
“Well at least you’re honest. Most men lie about having any female friends, like I’m suppose to believe a man doesn’t have at least three women to alternate.”
“Yeah, well one thing you will see about me is that I am honest when it comes to women. You know y’all can get crazy if a brotha’ leads y’all to believe that there is no other”.
“Thank you for being honest, I appreciate it, but don’t think that I am going to be one of your ‘women’”.
“That never crossed my mind, you look too smart for that. I want us to be friends, friends with benefits,” Sway said flashing his pearly whites.
“Good, I think I can handle that,” Alex said honestly.
She was glad that Sway was not trying to rope her in and use her like she believed Malcolm had done. She was curious to know what he meant by “with benefits” and was ready to take the plunge to find out. She was looking for someone just like Sway, a man who was not trying to make her commit to a false relationship. This could be just what Alex needed to fledge forward with her life.
