If education policy-makers really wanted to improve education, that task would be simple; as any problem-solving is simple. They have not identified the fundamental education problem to be solved. That problem is the lower twenty-five percent of students who are unprepared to learn, from family or cultural deprivation.
Instead, education has been hijacked by those national leaders who are fixated to prove the idea by James Coleman that by mixing students from different cultures, the weaker cultures will be educated by what he termed, ‘social capital.’ This is not an education concept.
And, we should not discount the possibility that politicians are not serious about improving education. According to Thomas Jefferson, the main purpose for education should be to prevent political tyranny. Adolf Hitler said, "Knowledge is ruin to my young men." Should it be a serious consideration that the less educated are easy targets, cannon fodder, for persuasive and convincing politicians? Education for our children will never be improved, or really effective, while national education policies maintain its tight grip on our education system. Their education programs and plans are only useless hype to improve education, while the real purpose is to enforce a broader social agenda that results only in less effective education. This book exposes this political game and gives a new strategy aimed directly at improving education for all students. Education in America is no longer education. It has evolved into a political, economic, and social concept where real education ideas and plans are given last thought or consideration, if any. These policies have thrown education into a confused jungle with no hope for weak students to survive or escape.
Improving education effectiveness?
Can it happen? Will it happen? History shows that in the ordinary scheme of events it's unlikely. Improving our education system is unlikely, for three fundamental reasons:
The first reason: People have a natural tendency to resist change. Our society cherishes orderliness, and to remain unchanged protects that safe and secure feeling. This concept is reinforced by an observation from psychologists Berelson and Steiner, who wrote: "People look for things they need or want, and the stronger the need, the greater the tendency to ignore irrelevant elements." Foremost, people in our society want order.
Any attempt to revolutionize our education system might require a change that would upset that order. Is social order important? We must not forget Adolf Hitler rose to power through his promise to establish order in Germany’s 1930's turbulent society.
The second reason: Leaders who control our society might fear a more educated society. A more educated society would be a society more difficult to manipulate and control. Again, referring to Adolf Hitler as an example, he once said, "Knowledge is ruin to my young men."
Perhaps our leaders who have power, or perceived power, and who are responsible for an orderly society are afraid to develop or allow a more educated society. Is it possible we are experiencing the time Thomas Jefferson emphasized? Is it possible that soon many of our citizens will be so uneducated they will be manipulated by rhetoric and false promises: a free chicken in every pot?
The uneducated and gullible person waits for government to deliver that free chicken. The educated and aware person asks who will pay for the free chickens, and why they are free.
The third reason: Money, profits, jobs, salaries, and bureaucracies are involved. A large segment of our society depends on jobs and other economic opportunities and power positions that exist in our current education jungle, called a system. Education effectiveness is only a secondary concern. A responsive and effective education system must be based on different levels and styles of training.
Currently, the education system is self focused. It will never serve its education purpose until it becomes student focused. Now all education efforts are devoted to delivering better education. It must be focused on the other side. It must be focused toward helping students learn how to receive that education.
