My first concious memory was of the immense family gathering to celebrate my sister Isabella's and my first communion. This was the first time I remembered not being afraid to be in the same room with my father. I wasn't afraid because I had just entered a convenant with Jesus: I had asked him to make my father disappear; I wanted the violent beatings to stop. I wanted to be a normal little girl, without the bleeding scars that'd keep me out of school for days at the time...
