This book results from over 100 interviews with ordinary Americans to get their views on Obama through his election and beyond. But more importantly it also includes more than the poltical because many individuals talked about their lives, their concerns and their values.
Therefore the book is a snap-shot of many Americans and American life at a critical point in American history. We get to see who we were then and compare that with who we are now-a mere two years later-how we and the world has changed.

Excerpt
This volume is intended to be a snap-shot of the period from 2007 to 2009 inclusive of the rise of Barack Obama, first as a candidate, and, then his election as President of the United States. It also examines the Obama style, its origins, textures and looks at how Obama learned his political style and values in the context of a specific mix of Chicago values, and those as I describe as mid-western. The combination of his family’s imparting those mid-western values, and what Obama learned he needed to do to win in Chicago politics, is, and will be, reflected in how he governs as President of the United States.
I draw a picture of the Chicago, I believe, shaped Obama’s political and social attitudes, and more generally, the mid-western set of values he exhibits. This last factor, I believe, puts into focus the fact that Obama was raised by a heart-land parent and grandparents who imparted mid-western values to the young Obama. These show up in his campaigning and his leadership and decision-making style in my view. I go into detail concerning those values and how they manifested in Obama’s approach to politics and decision-making--relating them to my own childhood. Obama’s Hyde Park is adjacent to my much more modest childhood haunts. I went to Hyde Park high. I walked those same streets he did seeking change. Many in my family still live in the Chicago Obama put his energy into-in his 13 Senate District.
Part compilation, part summary, the book seeks to interweave the reactions of internet participants and what was going on in their personal lives and their reactions to the Obama phenomenon and the rise of the first African-American President of the United States.
I conclude with my analysis of the Obama administration and the challenges the new administration faces. Mid-western heartland politician meets Washington power structure.

Amazon. com review
When I first read the synopsis of The Obama Chronicles I was a bit skeptical. This project of interviewing people across the country and then retelling them under the guise of a book that would honestly explore various facets of Obama's presidency and its implications seemed far fetched and a tad ambitious to me.
However, after reading the book, I have to say that the author managed to make it work. I actually enjoyed the first hand stories of people who are basically scattered all across the country, talking about their views, opinions and predictions on what it means to have Obama as president - and where they see it going.
This book is interesting because it features uncensored and first hand accounts from every day people who have nothing to gain or lose by being honest about their president and the state of their country.
This makes for fascinating reading and is even more interesting because of the variety of people quoted - which, I believe, represents a fair representation of just how populated and varied the US can truly be.
I liked this one.
