Shafts of golden light illuminated this remarkable sight as we gingerly climbed up the old footholds the Anasazi, the ancient ones, had climbed over a thousand years before. Upon reaching the top, we entered a small opening into an enormous dwelling while being extremely careful not to disturb even the minutest artifact. It was eerily beautiful, as if the occupants had left only a short time before our arrival. The vessels were placed as though they had just been used that very day. There were remnants of charcoal still in the fire pit. To this observer, it looked as though the charcoal would still be warm to the touch even though it had been there hundreds of years and sheltered from the elements by an enormous overhanging cliff and a stone wall that enclosed their dwelling. Out of respect, we spoke in quiet reverence. As we gazed back in the direction from which we had just come, it was evident that the original dwellers would have been able to spot their enemy approaching from miles away and thus were offered a measure of security. A spiritual feeling permeated this former tribal residence, and it seemed to welcome us for a brief stay. While I continued to videotape this awe-inspiring sight, I wondered why the Anasazi had left their aerie so suddenly.
By late afternoon, a gentle wind lingered in the canyon. We could hear it caress the trees as it softly enveloped us. Slate gray clouds began to form in the northern part of the sky, and a distant bolt of lightning followed by rumbling thunder hinted of an impending storm, soon confirmed by a much closer clap of thunder followed by a light sprinkling of rain. Long, mysterious shadows fell over the ancient dwelling, as if to indicate that it was time for us to take our leave. As we began our hike back down the canyon to our waiting helicopter, I stopped for one last look at this magnificent dwelling, and I thought of the wisdom of the ancient Native Americans who lived in complete harmony with the land.
