Robert Edgar Hardy was many things during his tumultuous life including fatherless boy, a soldier during World War Two, an aerospace engineer, raging alcoholic and an inmate at a hospital for the criminally insane. He was a lover, husband, father and troubled man who suffered from Manic Depression for most of his adult life. Confessions of a Bipolar Poet is a fascinating collection of poems by a man who chronicled his deepest feelings during different stages of mental health. He was an anachronistic individual who tried to live a normal suburban life but eventually succumbed to an often tortured existence of extreme behavioral problems and self medication. Writer Phillip E. Hardy meticulously assembled his father’s collection of extraordinary poetry, as well as including his one of his Grandfather’s World War One poems and several of his own contributions. This book delves into the triumphs and tribulations of the human condition and the blurred line between brilliance and madness.

Excerpt

Don’t sit in judgment
Of your fellow man
How can you know what their heart meant?
So do the best you can
And seek only your own flaws
The lives of others—who can tell
Are you enlisted in their cause?
When you have reached perfection
If such be your goal
You won’t need introspection
For you’ll have lifted up your soul
And in this state of bliss—
You’ll love men as they are
It seems that Christ did this
Were you born under his star?
