Inspired by the Songs of Solomon, J.J. Blackwood’s Frisson of Spirit reveals her poetic journey of discovery and revelation, pointing readers toward the one true spirit of God. J.J. Blackwood brings alive the universal questions that plague all mankind about worth, purpose, and the meaning of life with beautiful poetry born out of her most intense moments of sorrow and joy. As John Keats’s conception of life in poetry sought expression in the soul, so J.J. Blackwood adds the expression of the spirit and the will in Frisson of Spirit to alleviate the suffering that is an integral part of the human condition.”

Excerpt

This Scarlet Woman

Scarlet is the color of the skin that I wear,
fevered by a passion that’s beyond compare.
By the light of the moon I glow with a flare,
dancing as a flame that is ready to sear.

Burnished by the sun in a tropical clime,
heated and treated by love’s perfect rhymes.
Reflected in the stars like drops of life’s blood,
a rose unfolding from the grasp of its bud.

Some often wish they could color me blue.
Tainted and painted my scarlet shines through.
My nature just can’t hide my crimsoning hue,
I’m the woman who won’t fit in anyone’s shoe.

Scarlet I be with all my energy set free,
an unbridled mare, a wave cresting the seas.
Finding new pastures that are ever more green,
a refraction of sunsets in splendor and sheen.

Some say sins are scarlet, but I disagree,
and a scarlet woman isn’t judged in degrees.
So I wear my scarlet, but my soul can’t be seen,
Jesus Christ’s scarlet blood has washed it clean.
