A precise definition of “coming-of-age” would run something like “A critical moment in a youngster’s life where he or she makes a transition from childhood into adulthood.” More often than not this is portrayed in film though sexuality. Coming-of-age, however, is not limited to sex, can also include a child addressing death, disillusionment with parents and heroes, the development of a personal morality, dealing with abandonment and/or violence and so on. Maturing and “growing up” can happen at any age. So, unlike the first volume, this second edition has a broader scope. It includes films focusing on both children and adolescents and does not limit itself exclusively to sexual coming-of-age.
