The Costellino Family
New York City / June 1942

Sitting in his 2nd floor office above the Italian pizzeria he owned, Sambrasio Agostino smiled at the man across his desk and wondered how long it would be before someone put a bullet in his head for being brash and arrogant.

“You think we should back off, or we should be kind to the store owners and provide them with protection for free?

That is what you think?” he asked the man sitting across from him.

If it were not that Sambrasio found it amusing to the point of hysterical, he would have had him escorted out. Sambrasio was not impressed with the man’s balls but had agreed to let him talk.

“Yeah, win their respect and confidence and they will allow us to use their shops to run the numbers or store some of your merchandise. They help us and we help them. Simple as that,” the man responded.

“I don’t agree. I think it’s a stupid idea,” Sambrasio said almost spitting it out.

The man across from Sambrasio stood and smiled down at him.

“Sorry you feel that way. It is clear that I cannot say or do anything that can persuade you. I was hoping you would see things my way and would be more cooperative in pleasing me,” he said as he turned his back and walked towards the door.

“Please you? Who the fuck do you think you are? You stupid arrogant whop, get out of my office before I have your balls cut out and fed to my dogs,”
Sambrasio, now standing, shouted out to him as he watched him exit his office.

Sambrasio stared at the back of the closed door wondering who this person was, thinking he could just waltz in here and start telling him how to run my business.

A couple of months ago they hit a few stores for extortion money. For the most part, the owners were easily persuaded and cooperative. However, when they visited the owner of the bakery, a Mr. Alfred Bettino - this idiot - stood up to them. One of Sambrasio’s men ended up in the hospital with a broken arm after Bettino hit him with a bat and chased the other man out into the street. Sambrasio was furious.

This was unacceptable. What would the others think? That he was a pushover.

Sambrasio ordered a small army of his men to visit the bakery owner. When they got there, they found the store burned down and the owner gone. In fact, no one ever heard of Alfred Bettino.

All of a sudden, he shows up, and asks to talk with the boss, Sambrasio Agostino.

Stepping out of the pizzeria and into the darkness, Mr. Alfred Bettino nodded to the two men waiting across the street. Bettino walked up to them and they huddled in the entryway of a nearby apartment building.

A few minutes later, they disappeared into the darkness to wait.

Professional Reviews
It only takes one moment to transform an individual, but Theo Gresco, the protagonist has been front and center in many of these moments. A childhood in shambles and innocence lost, Gresco lost faith in trust itself, spiraling down the staircase of crime and betrayal-the only thing he knew. This premise of The Birth of an Assassin, by Antonio Bertot, is enticing and captivating, hooking the reader right from the get-go. As the novel revolves around the world of crime, the rise of the Giordano and Costellino crime families is well documented. The Birth of an Assassin is set against the backdrop of two major U.S. cities-Chicago and New York-in the early 1940s, and spans nearly two decades, from 1942 to 1964. The story opens up in Little Italy, Chicago, with eight-year-old Theo Gresco prancing through town with his most cherished possession, his camera. With little Theo's innocence intact, the neighborhood is not only ravaged by its own war, but suffering the effects of WWII as well. No one is secure as neighbors loot stores, and even steal from each other. These are desperate times. In order to protect themselves, Theo's father, Sergio, and other shop owners decide to hire an armed guard, Davino, for protection. Unknown to Davino, the woman he falls in love with is hired by the Sabrisio crime family to seduce him, and thus, seal his fate, along with the fates of the neighborhood shop owners. Sergio's murder results in Theo's loss of innocence, transforming him into what he soon becomes-a cold-blooded, revenge-seeking assassin. Before this transformation is complete, however, Theo and his mother, Lucia, go back to Italy to stay with Angelina Gresco, Lucia's mother-in-law. There, his mother is murdered, leaving Theo an orphan. As Angelina and Fernando, Theo's grandparents, and Theo flee toward a school for protection, Theo joins a shorthanded American battalion and kills for the first time. He also gets a taste of revenge for the first time, killing Herr Kaiser, the man who murdered his mother. Ultimately, the moment that captures Theo's rise to an assassin is when he has just slain Herr Kaiser. His grandmother takes the rifle out of his hand, and tries to hold him close and provide that maternal warmth that a nine-year-old should receive. During their embrace, he reaches out for the rifle and clutches it tightly, the compelling image of the assassin's realization-a metamorphosis complete. The Birth of an Assassin is at once poignant and powerful; it will keep readers riveted to the last page.

THE BIRTH OF AN ASSASSIN by Tony Bertot is an action packed suspense set in Chicago and New York in the early 1940's. It spans decades from 1942-1964. It is well written with depth, details and is action packed. It has action, suspense, murder, betrayal, loss of innocence, cold blooded killer, revenge, vengeance, and the life of an assassin. It is a powerful story of innocence lost and the transformation from a young boy to a cold blooded assassin. This story is full of action, intrigue, suspense and will keep you turning the pages from beginning to end. You will remember the characters long after the story ends. Wow! When I opened the pages, my first reaction was this author really organized his information well. Chapters listed with families, locations, and the time passages are all structured realistically and easy to follow. Reading this, I wanted to read the sequel, the Heart of an Assassin, so I hope to read and review that as well later!
This explains very well in raw description the Birth an an Assassin. Filled with intrigued, mystery, clouded with suspense and thrill rides, this story is very engaging and would make a great movie! I love new talent and reading books that you can't find in the big mainstream stores and this novel just reminded me why!

Read in one sitting, from morning to night, with tea in my hand, curled on my bed, I inched my fingers across the pages to reveal what would happen next. Love it!
