Helix, by MN Norton

Something has gone wrong with a top-secret biological warfare experiment at the CIA. Martin Reismann of the CIA and Sergei Petrov of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service have very little time to find out what it is. As they follow the trail of an assassin, they discover a hidden gene splice from a CIA lab has made its way into the Russian grain supply.

This novel touches on the fears of all those who are apprehensive about the government's use of recombinant DNA and the possible effect it could have as a weapon in biological warfare.

Experience the terror of realizing those fears have become a reality.

Available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and many online booksellers.

Excerpt

"Mr. Grachev, this is Mr. Faber. He'll be speaking with you."
It was the same man Faber had seen trying to come in the front door.
Janey turned on her heel and left, leaving an application on the desk and closing the door behind her.
Faber began a mental assessment of the man across from him. Suspecting that if Grachev wasn't a plant, he'd be dead or imprisoned for life if the Russian Federal Security Service caught him.
"Sit down Mr. Grachev and tell me what I can do for you."
The postman was holding an old, wooden cane between his gnarled fingers.
Faber noticed his hands were shaking as he placed the cane on the handle of the chair. As the old man bent his legs to sit down, his jacket opened up to reveal a wrinkled white shirt and threadbare olive colored necktie.
He spoke in halted phrases, using broken English.
“I have papers for you.”
“What kind of information do you have for me Mr. Grachev?”
Grachev looked at Faber through downcast eyes and, placing his hands on his lap, softly replied, "I have papers from members of the Russian government." Grachev's voice was frail and trembling.
Faber tried to keep a hint of excitement off of his face. He took a drink of coffee to calm his nerves.
“What are they about?” Faber asked.
"They are about Chechnya." The old man paused for only a moment, taking great care with his final statement.
"They are plans for the rebirth of the Soviet Union."

"That Helix is the code name for a secret government project gives some hint as to where Ms. Norton is taking us in this exciting, well-written story. This book melds history (Nazi aggression), with recent events(Chechnya’s struggle and the Muslim condition) and uses them cleverly as backdrop for a spy thriller with some very innovative propositions. An excellent read, that could be even better, this book is very entertaining and I find it very easy to recommend."

Helix, reviewed by Denise Clark
Let me first start off by saying I haven’t read such a good old-fashioned political thriller in a long time. Yes, we’ve all heard of John LeCarre and Robert Ludlum, but a new voice has just shouldered her way in, so those dudes better watch out. Helix just goes to show that a woman can write political-thrillers complete with Russian agents, chemical and biological threats and … let’s not forget the romance, shall we?Ms Norton does a superb job of illustrating the pain and anguish wrought by past wars. In her novel, Helix, the author focuses on political and military turmoil in a small corner of the world known as Chechnya. From there, we are transported to the labyrinthine world of American security based in Washington D.C. and Langley, Virginia. This novel is rich with a splendid mix of Cold War history and modern intrigue, Russian spies, good and bad, and best of all, a man by the name of Martin Reismann, a veteran agent in Counter Intelligence.

Alerted by former flame Sarah McCallister of a rumored plot to assassinate a foreign official, they meet to discuss the situation, little knowing what they’ve walked in to. And it starts off with a car bomb.

This action-packed novel offers much more than bombs and break-ins, however. It explores the decisions of two people who hold positions in a dangerous business that must decide whether to take risks with their relationship. Is it more beneficial to never make a commitment because of the dangers of the job, or to grab love and hold onto it no matter what the cost?

Ms. Norton’s rich characterizations, well-written plot and riveting action were a treat for this reader. Her knowledge of Russian politics, embassies and American security procedures is impressive without being so overdone it forces the reader to wade through extraneous and long-winded descriptions of gadgets and gizmos, plots and counter-plots. In short, Helix finds just the right combination of politics, romance, adventure and wonderful characters that I would love to meet if they were real. This book is indeed a treat, and I highly recommend it while looking forward to more from this gifted author.

This book is full of suspense and one of the most intriguing stories I’ve read in a long time. The author has you on the edge of your seat and it seems to be so real. The story draws you deeper and deeper into it. Once you start it you won’t be able to put it down till the last page is read.

I give this book 4 stars and recommend it to any one that likes suspense books.

Helix a warning? Terrorism is usually identified with explosives and arms. This book shows that bio-terrorism can expose humanity to far more terrifyingthreats. Manipulation of genes in grain seeds is already common practice so the stairs to terrorism is just one step.

Thriller and spy novel worthy of Follet and one of the better reads I have had in years. The detail and the careful charater development left me wanting more. I am looking forward to any sequels that come out.

This book is interesting, exciting, it goes beneath the surface of the events. The author offers a picture of Russian mentality that hardly can be found in other modern books written by Western writers.
I want to recommend this book to anyone trying to go beyond the news and wishing to understand some things that may have happened or maybe will happen in a near future.

An absolutely riveting read. Gives new meaning to "No man is an island". Eerie in its timeliness, it makes us rethink our conceptions of good and evil and shows us shades of grey previously unthought of. Ms. Norton has achieved what any great author strives for - she makes us think and think again.

This is a great spy novel...it has depth in the plot...the characters are realistic (you care about them)...the author has obviously done her research...it totally holds your attention. And, I learned a lot...I like that in a novel. This would make a great movie.

Fascinating. I, for one, enjoy a gripping story based on what's going on in today's world. Ms. Norton knows her stuff and has a way with words to match her mind. A definite recommended read.

A wonderfully written spy novel. Very captivating from the first chapter. I couldn't stop reading it. The characters stuck in my mind even when I wasn't reading. Puts reality to what I and many others have been discussing, terminator technology. The plot was real which made it even more of an intersting read. Have already recommended to my friends and family. Can't wait to read more from this Author.

This novel touches on the fears that many have in our current world. By using a bio-weapon and linking it to our food chain the author as touched on an issue very relative to today’s society. In my opinion if you are looking for a well-written spy novel then this is the book to read.

A fine read that shows us some of shadows that infest our world today. A world incresasingly interdependent. Let no one be fooled. Ms. Norton shows us just how dangerous are the games that Nations play. These shadows are REAL, and this novel explores the dangers to our world from a lesser known enemy. Just as deadly as any bomb ever invented. Kept me glued to the pages.

A different prespective on terrorism and its motives. This tale uses the growth bio-weapons and the genetically manipulated crops many are using now to paint a picture of possible mass destruction. By showing both evil and good in the people behind the terror, a human face is painted which more of us can understand, if not condone. A rousing tale and one well told.

An interesting work, even for somebody who does not normally like spy novels. The novel touchs chords of fears we all have that bio-technology will be used as a weapon of mass destruction in ways we have not yet thought of. By exploring the motives for terrorism through terrorists who are not total nasties, MN Norton gives us a clearer picture then we often get from the press on what makes their world so dangerous.

An excellent spy thriller with many twists and turns. Islamic terrorists have the key to using bio-weapons of a unique kind which could threaten world food production. The US has a problem, they developed the weapons. THe hero has to solve the crisis, but keep American involvement out of it. The fact that the main antogonist is a sympathetic person is fascinating. Great book and worth the reading time.
