Excerpt
The Rainbow children lived in a house which had a huge mulberry tree growing in the back garden. In summer, they sat in the mulberry tree, eating mulberries.
"I love mulberries," Katie said to Jenny who soon made friends with the Rainbow children.
"So do I," said Jenny.
Katie stuffed ripe mulberries in her mouth. Purple juice oozed down her chin. She wiped it away with the back of her hand.
"You should be called Katie Mulberry instead of Katie Rainbow," said Jenny.
"So I should," agreed Katie.
"We're going to build a raft so we can have a great adventure," said Tommy. "Would you like to come, Jenny?"
"I hope we don't see a crocodile," said Amelia who was a little timid.
"Silly," said Tommy. "Crocodiles only live in the north of Australia."
Jenny helped Tommy and Katie make a raft. They nailed planks of wood to two lengths of timber and tied a red flag with a rainbow painted on it to a pole at the front of the raft.
Amelia packed a basket with mulberry jam sandwiches, apples and a bottle of water and one of orange juice.
"We'll be gone all day," Katie cried to the house by the mulberry tree as they set sail down the creek.
They stopped beside the acacia bush and took on board, Mary and Joey Kangaroo, and Clarrie Crow who promised not to eat other people's food.
"I'll only eat my share," said Clarrie Crow.
"Don't stand so close to the edge of the raft, Joey," Mary Kangaroo warned. "You'll fall in."
Joey Kangaroo didn't take any notice of his mother. He was behaving very naughtily, indeed.
The raft drifted ever so slowly down the creek. "I wonder if we'll ever have an adventure," said Tommy.
