The Marriage Challenge

Marriage is hard work, but worth it.
The challenge is to stop trying to avoid the frustration, pain and discouragement of marriage. Too often we focus on how to not be a bad spouse, how to not hurt feelings, how to not get in trouble. But then our focus is entirely on what NOT to do.
Instead, shift your focus. Look at what you want to do, embrace the joy, encouragement and challenge of marriage. This book offers one conversation a week, for an entire year, to help you move toward a better marriage. You can't change everything about your marriage overnight, but, working a bit at a time, you can improve your marriage.
One hour a week for a conversation with your spouse can change your marriage from what not to do, into what you've always wanted. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it

Excerpt

Better marriages donít just happen, they take time and work. But you might be surprised at how much you can accomplish in just a little bit of time and just a bit more effort. If you can make time in your schedule to have a one hour conversation with your spouse every week, at the end of a year, you can have a much better marriage.

Most marriages arenít in meltdown-crisis mode. Most marriages are pretty good; not perfect, but okay. Most marriage books, however, are written for people in crisis mode, about marriages that are falling apart and by counselors who only deal with failing relationships. Those books serve a good purpose, but they donít help the majority of marriages that arenít in that position yet.

This book isnít about how to fix all the stuff youíre doing wrong. If you need that, you need a different book (and there are plenty of great options out there, check out the bibliography for some of our favorites). But, if you want to start with your marriage thatís alright now and work to make it great, then the Marriage Challenge is what youíre looking for.

The challenge is this: have one conversation a week, every week for the next year. Thatís it. It will probably take about an hour of your life to read the short section for that week and talk through the questions that follow. The plan is to make it simple and painless. The sections average about three paragraphs and get to the point, then there are about three discussion topics, questions or conversation starters. You donít have to use the questions printed, if you donít want to. Theyíre just there to help you get into a conversation. If you only talk about the first question, thatís fine, or if you blow through all the questions quickly and have a different conversation, thatís great too.

The real goal of this whole book is to get you and your spouse into the habit of talking about your relationship. Whatís going to transform your marriage from pretty good into envy-of-the-neighbors amazing is the consistent practice of communication. Thatís both speaking and listening (just in case you forgot).
