Reid’s amazing wit and versatility is readily evident in both long pieces such as “Muzzle That Dog!” and “Tales My Mother Told Me” as well as his shorter works with intriguing titles like “A Sneeze with the Bees” and “Miss Always Late”.
Of course, not all of the poems could be described as nonsensical. There are variations. “A Fly in the Eye” is total nonsense, but “Muzzle That Dog!” comes closer to satire, while “A Song for All the Pirates Out There!” could be described as parody.
While all 52 poems fall into the category known as “traditional” – in the sense that all are metrical and use extremely clever rhymes extensively – many are not bound by the usual poetic conventions.
Reid is not afraid to try effective variations in both rhyme and rhythm, and he often formats his poems into attractive images.
Another interesting variation from the usual poetry anthology that lands on a critic's desk, is that this collection is written from a feminine point of view. Many of the poems are narrated by a woman named Sally, who gradually reveals her status and character as the book progresses. So it’s a good idea to read the poems in order, rather than just dip into the book here and there.
Summing up, this is a must-have collection for all who admire wit and satire – or simply for the many of us who like to enjoy a really good laugh!
