Discipline is a zany, adult comedy with a message. It's funny and romantic, and the banter will make you laugh out loud, but it's also a powerful and serious play, for hidden amongst the laughs there is a deeper meaning.

Discipline is a two-act play. It takes place in Manhattan.

Meet Harold Jenkins, a sexually frustrated man. Essentially isolated in his New York City apartment, he is helpless against the powers that control his every hour. He’s stuck in a rut of old habits, and that’s making things difficult with Lilly, his less-than-generous lady love. But for Harold, new possibilities arrive in the appearance of a mysterious stranger. He can’t quite figure out how to respond to this strange person he finds sniffling on his stove in the middle of the night.

Bewildered and confused, Harold is faced with a critical decision: will he succumb to the requirements dictated by the powers that be, or will he take control of his life in the only way he knows how? Harold has no problems taking matters into his own hands—and that’s part of the problem.

Discipline is a madcap comedy with a sympathetic mix of wit, banter, love, and frustration that flirts with the obsessions that can drive a man to madness.

Thereís a correct way to do everything; not that I would ever expect you to understand that.

What are you saying? Are you implying that I do not do things correctly?

Did a light just go on?

Why, I do lots of things correctly.

Really? Name one.

HAROLD (thinking.)
I shave. I get up in the morning and I shave, correctly.

No you donít.

Donít be absurd, of course I do. Iíve been shaving my whole life. I shave correctly.

Iíve watched you shave. You shave like a moron.

Why, thatís news. And how does a moron shave?

You shave your entire face in one directionódown.

(She illustrates on her face.)

So, whatís your point?

There are places you canít reach by shaving down.

(She illustrates, puffing out her cheek and then her upper lip.)

You should shave up and down. Also, if you shave in both directions you wonít cut yourself the way you normally do.

When were you going to mention this?

Iíve been meaning to.

I could have saved quarts of blood had you said something sooner.

Sorry, slipped my mind.

Blogcritics Review
Poor Howard Jenkins lives in state of constant sexual frustration. Living with beautiful, sexy Lily who frequently spurns his sexual advances adds to his discomfort. Lily constantly reminds Howard that he needs to keep his urges in check because he has already been in trouble for his outrageous behavior. But having to see Lily in her sexy lingerie is pure torture for Howard, so he usually has to take matters into his own hands. He rudely lets Lily know that someday he will have a woman who will satisfy his needs and not try to encourage him to discipline himself so that his behavior will remain appropriate.
One night, after once again being spurned by Lily, Howard realizes that there is a stranger in their apartment. Not only is this man just a stranger, but he is a very strange man named Frustrato. Lily doesnít believe this man exists even after Howard calls the police to report his intrusion. When Frustrato reappears, Howard overcomes his fears to find out why he is there. Threatening Howard with the need to get rid of Lily, Howard has a dilemma. Frustrato promises Howard a friendship that will be full of the two men being able to pursue whatever they desire, Lilly, inspire of her reticence with fulfilling Howard's desires, represents a stable, disciplining force in his life. Howard truly canít picture his life without her, but it will make his special doctors happier to have her gone. Howard has to decide which direction he wants to go, and he has to make this decision very quickly.
Discipline, by Gerard Bianco, written in play format, truly made me laugh out loud. The outrageousness of Howardís thoughts and Lilyís reactions to those thoughts was hysterical. Frustrato also adds an interesting twist to the story by trying to convince Howard to take the path that he thought he wanted, but when faced with the reality of the situation he realizes that he might not. This play is quirky and fun and has some twists in the story that make it a very unique book to read. __Paige Lovitt
