Fresh Beginnings by Donna Marie

A romantic short story about Rick and Jenna, who after two years of closely working together in Rick's budding career in law, find a new appreciation for each other while working on a particular case. For two years, Jenna continuously repressed any romantic feeling she had for her employer. Although Rick recognized her beauty and sincerity, never did he let their working relationship evolve to anything more. Once his emotional side is forced to emerge when small children become the center of his court case, everything could change for Rick and Jenna. After watching each other go in and out of other relationships for so long, Rick and Jenna need to find a way of admitting their new feelings for each other.

Excerpt

When Jenna walked into Rick’s office for her job interview almost two years ago, she was instantly enchanted with his charismatic personality as well as his good looks. His warm, slightly dimpled smile along with his soft, hazel eyes enchanted her from the first glimpse of him. She was captivated with the presence of the sophisticated, fresh attorney, sharply dressed in a crisp, white shirt, silk tie, and burgundy suspenders adding to the professional attire.

He rose from his plush, leather chair when she softly knocked on his office door, which was slightly ajar.

“Hello, you must be Jenna.” He cordially extended his arm to shake her hand.

“Hello, Mr. Peterson. Yes, I am Jenna Bennetto.”

“Please, just call me Rick,” he said with a warm smile.

Fumbling through one of many piles of disordered papers on his desk, he added with confusion, “I have your resume somewhere. It’s obvious that I could use some organization.”

She smiled, not leading on to her attentiveness of his charming looks.

“I’ve only been in business for a few months. My father recently retired and I’m trying to bring his practice back into action,” he explained. “I’ve come to realize that an assistant could be a benefit to my organizational inadequacies. Why don’t you have a seat and begin by you telling me about yourself while I look through this mess.”

She was amused while observing his glance through every folder desperately in hunt for her resume.

“I’ve been a legal assistant for the past four years,” she began to explain. “My previous employer moved to California, so I am seeking new employment in the area. He made me an offer to relocate, but I had no desire to leave my family or the Chicago area.”

After finally locating the resume, Rick sat back and parked his feet up on the oak desk. Although he had no intentions of hiring a woman to become romantically involved with, Jenna’s stunning beauty did not come unnoticed to him on that day when he finally sat back to review the resume and interview Jenna. She was strikingly dressed. The loveliness of her fine features and the sincerity in her brown eyes did not go unnoticed. Since allowing himself to be attracted to a prospective employee wasn’t an option in his mind, Rick put his tempting thoughts of her attractive presence quickly onto a back burner, shunning his observation of her faultless appearance.

As he thumbed through her paperwork, he stated, “By the looks of this resume, it seems you should be sitting here and me in the hot seat.”

She smiled as she eyed the folders scattered about.

“I hardly think so. But, I am highly organized and you may need someone to keep your work in order.”

“You could say that again,” he admitted, appreciating her honest humor. “You must have been a real keeper to your previous employer, seeing that he asked you to relocate with him.”

“I guess he was satisfied with my work,” she nodded.
