Fiction

A man loses his beloved wife in an accident and retreats from life.

The sudden loss of his beloved wife causes Tony, a gentle hearted man, to retreat into a secluded depression. Coaxed by his children to move into a retirement home, he meets Sylvia, a beautiful Palm Beach socialite. When she remembers him from her past, she wants nothing to do with him. Can they put aside their differences in favor of a bond that will rival their first loves? Can they overcome the obstacles of life long enough to have one last chance?

Excerpt

TONY
Oh - so now you're interested in my singing?

SYLVIA
No. Not really. I'm just curious, that's all.

TONY
Ya know - I don't get women like you.

SYLVIA
What is it that you don't get?

TONY
You spend two hundred on a hairdo. You put on
enough makeup to paint a Monet. You could buy
a car with the money you spend on shoes. Then
when a man pays you attention, you give him
the brushoff.

SYLVIA
Attention? You think I do this for attention?

TONY
What other reason could there be?

SYLVIA
Maybe a woman just wants to look nice.

TONY
Oh, come on. Women can look nice in blue
jeans and polo shirts.

SYLVIA
Then why do you bother chasing me?

(pause)

TONY
I really don't know anymore. I thought you
might actually have a heart once we got to
know each other.
(pause)

So - why did you finally join me tonight?

SYLVIA
I thought you looked like someone I knew in
high school.

TONY
An old boyfriend?

SYLVIA
Oh - good heavens, no.
Some loser named Tony Evans.

TONY
Hey, that's my name. Where do you get off
calling me a loser?
You haven't even told me your name.

SYLVIA
Oh, forgive me. I'm sorry. My name is Sylvia.
Sylvia Porter. Now do you remember me?

TONY
Oh, yeah. It's comin' back to me now. I
asked you out in high school. You didn't
even have the courtesy to tell me no. You
just turned around and walked the other way.

SYLVIA
You were such a nerd back then.

TONY
Even nerds have hearts, Sylvia. You can see
I'm not a nerd anymore.
Anyway - I'm glad you said no.

SYLVIA
Glad?

TONY
Yes. It gave me the opportunity to find a
real woman. One with a heart.

SYLVIA
And who was that?

TONY
Only the most beautiful girl in school.

SYLVIA
It couldn't have been. I never dated you.

TONY
I said the most beautiful girl. Not the one
who thought she was.

SYLVIA
Who was more beautiful than I?

TONY
Julia Martin. You remember her?

SYLVIA
Julia Martin? How did beautiful Julia end up
with Tony the nerd? This - I gotta hear.

TONY
It was a school dance. I couldn't dance -
but Julia - she was swirlin' up a storm. She
tripped over something and fell right into my
arms. We laughed about it the rest of the
night. Eventually it gave me the courage to
ask her out. Been together ever since.

SYLVIA
If you're so happy with Julia, then what are
you doing here with me?

TONY
Julia's - not with me anymore.

SYLVIA
I didn't think so. No wonder you're on edge.

TONY
No. I came here depressed. It's you who has
me on edge.

SYLVIA
You're blaming your mood swings on me?

TONY
Keep arguing. People might actually think
we're married.

SYLVIA
Ahh, heaven forbid.

TONY
I'm not such a bad guy, you know. You ought
to consider yourself lucky I'm sitting with
you. Who else would put up with all this?

SYLVIA
Lucky? You're just after my body like all the
other men all my life.

TONY
Not all men are that superficial, Sylvia.
It just proves - you don't know the real Tony.

SYLVIA
Oh, really? Will the real Tony Evans please
stand up.

TONY
For God sake, Julia and I never fought this much in thirty six years of marriage.

SYLVIA
Then why did she leave you?

TONY
She died.
(pause)

SYLVIA
Oh my God, Tony. I'm so sorry. How?

TONY
A drunk driver hit us. She went into a coma. I sat up with her day and night praying she'd come out it.
She died three days later.
(pause)
So you still think I'm the same guy you knew in high school?

SYLVIA
That would change anyone. It must have been
difficult.

TONY
That's why I'm here. To get past the pain.
It's been eight months. I'll never forget what we had, but sooner or later, I need to start living again.

SYLVIA
You must think I'm pretty insensitive.

TONY
No argument there. So – you wanna keep fighting - or
you think we're better off dating?

SYLVIA
That's a new one, Tony, even for me. I don't
know. Which would be more fun?

TONY
With you – who knows?

SYLVIA
It would never last.

TONY
I know that. You'd run out of things to fight
about.

SYLVIA
I don't want to fight. I can't help myself. I
got used to it from too many bad marriages.

TONY
So change that.

SYLVIA
Only a man like Jack could help me change that.

TONY
Jack?

SYLVIA
The guy I dated most of our senior year.
Don't you remember?

TONY
Oh, you mean Jack the jock?

SYLVIA
Jack the jock was the love of my life.

TONY
So you got married?

SYLVIA
No.

TONY
Guess good ol' Jack wised up in time.

SYLVIA
Good old Jack left me standing at the alter.
I spent most of my life looking for love again.
When I didn't find love, I settled for
marriage.

TONY
Marriage without love, huh? That's so Palm
Beach. It must have been the money, then.

SYLVIA
I did have a lot of money. But sooner or
later, money became less important. I wanted
love. No one since Jack could understand
how much love really mattered to me.

TONY
Of course they couldn't. You put up a wall so
high, who the hell could ever get over it?

SYLVIA
A wall? I gave them everything they wanted.

TONY
You gave them your body. And they gave you
money. That's not a marriage. That's a -

SYLVIA
Don't say it!

TONY
Call it whatever you want. But did you ever
open your heart and put someone else's needs
above your own?

SYLVIA
Jack broke my heart. After that, how could I
ever trust another man that way?

TONY
So you punished every other man for Jack's mistake. You want love in your life again, Sylvia? Tear down that wall.

SYLVIA
I don't think I can do that alone. Would you
be willing to help me, Tony?

TONY
Me? I thought you weren't interested in me.

SYLVIA
Women change their minds, you know. We're
entitled. It's part of our birth right.

TONY
I don't know. I want someone more like Julia.
Someone with a heart.
