Excerpt
I loved to feel the cool stones on my hands. My The jail was a great refuge in June, but even in the winter, I found it pleasant to play in.
There was so much fun imagining the structure when it was full, back in the gold rush. I could
almost hear the walls and floors resounding to the voices of the thousands of lawless men that
lived back then. In the large, empty vastness of our jail, I loved pretending I needed to find
escape routes.
One day after tromping through the halls for an hour, I found a locked door.
Why is it shut tight?

Twisted Tale of Dark Fiction
This is a unique story. The author piques the reader's interest from the very beginning, teasing about a secret door that has been concealed from Kevin ever since his birth. The gradual build-up and pacing of the story works well. Though some parts proved to be predictable, the ending was very unexpected. Overall, I enjoyed this tale and would recommend it to others who like something a little different.
A Quck An Unusual Read
As I started to read this unusual tale I had no idea of its length, but after reading the first sentence I was hooked. I wound up reading the whole story in less than an hour. The writing is tight and the story grips you, especially when you realize the horrible secret the boy's father has been keeping all these years. There is an ominous air about a specific locked door and when you find out what is behind it you are almost at the end of the story. When I found out the secret I got little chills. If you like a story with just a little bit of darkness and one you can read very fast, this is for you.
Chilling
Madeleine McLaughlin has written a chilling story about a boy’s burning curiosity to discover what is behind a mysterious door in a prison his father used to work in. As the boy learns the mystery of the Mountain City Bronzes, he unearths part of the city’s dark past as well as the role his father played in it. rnrnAlthough the story started off a little slowly for me, the ending was definitely worth it. It gave me shivers. If you like dark fiction, give this story a try. rn rn
