Sold by her family, she welcomes the chance to escape with an outlaw pursued by his own evil twin.

Angeline has lived with John Prophet for almost 3 years when she comes of age and he decides to force her to begin to perform her wifely duties. Sold to him by her parents who found themselves destitute on the way to California, she has been content in playing the daughter role to Prophet. Now she must get away.

Unsuccerssful outlaw Jesse Cole is blown into her life by a tornado while Prophet is in town. Wounded, he tells her he tried to rob the bank down in Topeka, when in reality he has never done more than a few small jobs. Hiding him in the barn, she tends to his wounds.

Angeline has picked up small gold nuggets from a nearby closed gold mine close to Circleville, Kansas, and hopes to use the gold to pay for her escape. Now she has "her own outlaw" who can help her, if only he will. He balks at first, but when he overhears Prophet hitting "his angel" he decides to get her away from him.

Pursued by the local sheriff, John Prophet and his own evil twin brother Charlie, the two flee. Jesse is mistaken for Charlie, who killed a deputy, and captured and put in jail. Charlie helps Angel break him out, but this is only the beginning of their problems. For Charlie has other plans for the two and leads them deep into danger.

Excerpt
Refusing to let him get away with that, she took another step, brushing a thigh against his arm. He felt warm, hard, damp from his rain-barrel bath. Her breasts tingled and she dragged in a breath, grateful she'd removed their hateful binding before coming to him. She could do it if she had to, seduce him like the common whores Prophet often railed about. It would be so much better than letting John Prophet take her. With Jesse she might actually enjoy what men did to women, though whispers overheard from women of the church said different. According to them, there was no liking what men wanted from women. The way she felt this moment said that was a lie.
She whispered his name and ran fingers through his glossy auburn hair. The smell of hay hung thick in the air, stirred by an evening wind that carried on it the tang of freshly broken soil. The new-washed maleness of him reached deep inside her, sent quivers of heat to places she hadn't known her body possessed.
For an instant he leaned his head against her, turned so that his breath penetrated the fabric of her dress, warming her flesh and feeding a rising desire.
Oh, yes. She wanted this. Wanted it beyond any plan to trick him. His hands on her breasts, his mouth on hers.To make him need her enough he'd give in to her pleas.
She cupped his head between her palms, held him there for a moment as her passion mounted, its drumming the plucking of a taut string down in her most womanly place. It held a rhythm ancient as time itself.
Lowering herself to both knees, she trailed a hand inside his shirt, peering at him through slitted eyes to see that he'd tipped his head back, rapt features streaked in moonlight. His full lips gleamed, long lashes cast shadows on darkly stubbled cheeks. She placed her lips against the strong slant of his jaw, then moved along the rough whiskers toward his mouth. His tongue peeked between parted lips and she hesitated, so close they were almost touching. A thrumming grew between her thighs and she moaned.
He leaned forward and gently captured her mouth. His lips were like smooth silk, moist and sweet. A tiny groan rolled from deep down in his throat and he rubbed a thumb tenderly along the flesh at the base of her neck, spread a palm over her unbound breast. The touch seared like fire and sent shudders through her. She leaned into the cupped hand, her nipple hardening against his touch. For a long moment he simply held her, exploring the taut nipple, sending bolts of desire through her entire body.
Lifting her skirts, she straddled his thighs, forcing his one knee down flat so that she sat across his lap, their clothing the only barrier between the growing desire. The movement obviously surprised him, and he could only grunt. He throbbed hotly against her, moaned in ecstasy and at last captured her in a tight embrace, as if to turn her loose would be to fall into hell itself.
