Who are the Maya? What motivated them to create ethereal pyramids and intricate calendars? Did they predict December 21, 2012 is the end of time?

A small bookstore in a rustic pueblo in the Yucatan was apparently the right place for author and journalist Jeanine Kitchel to nurture her craving to learn more about the Maya culture.

Kitchel moved to Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico in 1997 after traveling there for years in the 1980s. Her former bookstore, one of seven in the state, carried numerous titles about the Maya, their culture, the pyramids, breaking the code, the calendars, Yucatan explorers and the myths of Chilam Bilam and the Popul Vuh.

Becoming more mesmerized by the Maya with each passing year, she began writing about them for various Mexico websites.  Then her writing range expanded to The Miami Herald and three Mexico City newspapers.

Flash forward to 2012 and the end date debate.  Who better to author a book detailing the end time prophecy about the Maya calendar than Kitchel?

As a journalist, Kitchel brings a realistic tone to the end date debate: paradigm shift or resetting the clock?

The book emphasizes who are the Maya, their calendar system, Maya astronomy and the night sky, 2012ology, the collapse and abandonment of the pyramids and the prophecy as seen by Maya elders.

Several catch phrases have gone mainstream in the past few years--Maya prophecy, end date, 2012ologists and December 21, 2012. We've been deluged with information about the day made famous by the notorious Maya calendar.

Who are the Maya and who do they have such a profound impact on our imaginations? Does their calendar predict the world's end December 21, 2012?
