Pacific War Ghosts

December 7, 1941 - that infamous morning when 350 Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes roared over Pearl Harbor, sparking a conflict that would forever change the way of life on the jungle-clad islands of the South Pacific.

Pacific War Ghosts is a personal acount of author Tony Maxwell's journeys to the battlefields of the South Pacific in search of the fast disappearing relics left behind by this war.

This book, which describes the authors visits to New Guinea ( Kokoda Trail, Buna), the Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal), Bougainville and the island of Betio on the Tarawa Atoll, is lavishly illustrated by over 100 war-time and present day photos.

Roughing it in the South Pacific

John Hamill - John's Military History.com

In this short book, film maker Tony Maxwell relates to his travels to the World War II battlefields of the South Pacific. He gives brief well written histories of the places that he visited. Being fascinated with the Pacific War, I have wondered about touring the sites myself. It will likely never happen, which may be just as well considering some of Maxwell's experiences. His book is a good substitute, though, as travel in the area does not seem especially pleasant. Roughing it in the jungle is only part of it.

Among other things there are "raskols" looking for opportunities for robbery. On Betio, development is beginning to fill the island, and residents use the lagoon as a toilet. All the while many of the remains of war are disappearing - sold as relics. The author's travels make for enjoyable reading.
