A funny romp. Not great literature, but a great escape!
I bought the book for myself, but I still haven't had time to read it. However, my wife was recently in hospital and ran out of things to read, so I took it in to her as part of the ill assorted collection of things I swept off my shelves.
On my next visit, I found her in pain from laughing (she has a stomach problem!), so maybe it should carry a health warning. Thanks for keeping her amused. I asked her if she's do a short review to post on here (she can't be bothererd with internet stuff herself as she's much too sensible). Here is what she wrote:
" They say that timing is everything in comedy. Whether it's a Brian Rix farce, a Tommy Cooper sketch, or a sitcom punch line - the pause before the humour hits is carefully rehearsed and timed. So it is with .... In his book ..., his control of words brings out the humour throughout the stories. Many of the escapades are predictable but the author's style maximises the inevitable disasters to make them constantly funny.
They also say the timing in sex is vitally important, and the bawdy episodes in the book prove this point. Combine the disasters with the love of life and open appreciation of the joy of sex in unexpected situations and it provides amusement from cover to cover."
[I'm not sure I like the implications of her phrase "They also say timing in sex is vitally important". I wonder who is 'they' and why she has to consult 'them'. From my experience the most important piece of timing in sex is that it happens after a good dinner including at least two bottles of wine, or it doesn't happen at all! No matter - one of her degrees is in English so she ought to know what she's talking about in literature if not in ..... that's enough from me.]
