Excerpt
Something in Audelia's peripheral vision broke the spell. She raised her head to look in that horizon's direction. A sour taste rose from the pit of her stomach to her throat and caused her world to change to a throbbing whiteness. She took a gulp of air before reaching over to roughly tuck Jason's head closer to the ground. He glared at her, eyes darkening with anger. When he opened his mouth to yell, she quickly reached out to cover it. The anger changed to astonishment.
"Be still, Jason. Injuns have come over the rise and are headed straight for us." She spoke in a husky whisper. "Don't move and stay close to the ground." She watched for his reaction to her words, ready to reach forward to forestall any sudden movement. He opened his mouth to speak but no sound came out.
She pointed, keeping her out-stretched arm close to the ground's surface. He turned to follow her direction. His body jerked as he spotted what she pointed out. Possibilities rushed about in her mind, as she tried to decide what to do. She knew they were too far from the cabin to make it back without being spotted. Her mind scrambled to remember somewhere to hide. Perhaps if they just lay still and stay low, the Indians would pass them by. What could she do to protect Jason if they were discovered?
