This story is narrated by Daya, as seen through her eyes.

The humans she meets along the way are called hunters but she learns that not all humans are alike.

Excerpt
Finley and I had been traveling along the rocky Cherokee trails that ran through North Carolina’s mountainous terrain for days. We were tired and hungry but we could not stop for long as danger lurked on every turn. Only the most skilled Bucks had made it through the hunting seasons, finding their way to safety.
Attempting to outsmart the determined hunter was not easy, especially for two doe traveling alone. Finley being an older deer and myself, a young inexperienced doe, we depended on each other.
I could not help but think about Ridge, the most courageous of all bucks and the father of my fawn. While most Bucks did not stick around in one place too long, Ridge was different from most bucks. Ridge took it upon himself to become the protector over me, and my beloved mother. Sadly, my mother was killed by some hunters, leaving me alone and in the care of Ridge.
