Detention centers are over flowing and so are prisons.  Somethings wrong.  How do our children prove to themselves and their peers that they are brave and courageous?  Rites of passage no longer apply in our modern world.  There aren't any bears for young boys to slay in Chicago, and much less for girls.  They tag tall buildings, join gangs, buy guns, taste every type of drug, children have children, all dangerous behaviors to prove themselves.  A radical new program, The Phoenix Program, a program designed strickly for use at the Garthbay academy is showing promise and two brave teachers are trying to scale the program to be used in our inner cities and schools, clubs, anywhere, as long as long as adults are willing to use the concept to teach and assist the young in discovering their potential and becoming who they've always wanted to be.

Excerpt

FROM NEW ENGLAND The BARE FOOT CAFÉ’ www.barefootcafebooks.com exposes society’s failure to challenge our youth. Did you know you were brave and courageous as an adolescent? “YO, PHOENIX!” In the midst of stringent rules, adolescents forced to follow the Phoenix program find themselves capable and worthy of becoming more than they had ever imagined. It’s a story of personal growth, trust and discovery, friendship and betrayal. Did I mention that all hell breaks loose at Garthbay military academy?
Garthbay Military Academy, a private, all too proper prep-school rests peacefully on an island off the coast of Maine. Wealthy parents pay exorbitant amounts of money to redirect their wayward progenies. Philanthropist Alexander Gerard grants a few indigent youths a full scholarship, just another secret kept by Dr. Fletcher, the Head Master.

Cadets face the rigors of boot camp, strange rite-of-passage rituals and stringent academic schedules. Although their accommodations rival opulent five star hotels, cameras peer into every corner of their lives. Nobody’s happy but one day everything changes. Straight out of a detention Center, handsome, master mind, Cadet Theodore Anthony discovers the control room, the heart of the island. He takes control of the cameras at night, after the personnel have retired. With unlimited access to the wine cellars Theo and his friends partake in boisterous parties. Teens reeling from puberty ride the erotic wave of their youth. Did I mention . . . all hell breaks loose?

Professional Reviews

Exceptional family adventure
Contains no foul language or erotica. An adventure story everyone can enjoy. The Old Ones was also used as a teaching tool, teaching English as a second language. Highly recommended by all readers.

Great tough love teaching tool
All hell breaks out at the tough-love military academy. Strong language and sexual content mirrors life, not only the students who are entering their erotic awareness but the high priced teachers who struggle with their own truths. Excellent read. If it wasn't for the strong language and sex, I believe all teens would greatly benefit by it. Parents and teachers can gain much insight into the needs of our fast growing, modern children.
