Gimme-Jimmy was a greedy and selfish bully who needed to learn to share. Alas, his hand enlarged every time he said “Gimme”. His “Polite Rule” helped him make friends!

James Alexander’s nickname was Gimme-Jimmy because he was a greedy and selfish bully.  Imagine Jimmy’s concern when he discovered that every time he said the word “Gimme”, his hand grew larger.  Jimmy was happy to discover that when he was polite and said “Please” and “Thank you”, his hand began to shrink.  He started practicing his new “Polite Rule” and found out that it was much more fun to share.

Excerpt
James Alexander’s nickname was Jim,
But nobody would be friends with him.
No one wanted to play with Jimmy,
For Jim Alexander always said, “Gimme.”
“Gimme my books,” he’d say. “Gimme my toys.”
He’d grab from the girls and he’d snatch from the boys.
Jill didn’t like him and neither did Jack,
For Jimmy would take things and not give them back.
Jim was a bully at home and at school;
Though nobody liked him, he thought he was cool.

Professional Reviews

Wild About Reading Review
Sherrill does it again! She has written another great book that will teach children morals in an enjoyable, non preachy way. Gimme-Jimmy is beautifully rhymed story about a bully named Jimmy. He snatches and takes what is not his. He never asks. He is very rude and always demanding "Gimme". He learns a valuable lesson when his hand swells to an enormous size. He must be polite and not say "Gimme" for his hand to return to its normal size.

My favorite part is Jimmy's New Polite Rule:

"To try to treat others as I'd like to be,
To try to see things the way others might see,
To try to be helpful, and do what is right,
And to try at all times to be very polite!"

The illustrations, as always, are excellent. I have used this in therapy with my young clients and one of my four year old clients now wants to read it every session. We say the polite rule and she chimes in very loudly the last word of every sentence. Great job, Ms Cannon!

American Chronicles Review
Gimme-Jimmy is a picture book in rhyme about a bully named Jimmy who hates to share. His father told Jimmy: You'd better be careful, you must understand, your greed may show up in the size of your hand. Your hand will get bigger, the more that you take, and you will be sorry you made this mistake. Your poor little hand will continue to grow, until it will rest on the top of your toe. (As stated in the book.)
Jimmy takes and takes and takes, and his hand gets bigger and bigger and bigger. It even gets the size of his head. I read this to my son in medical school as he was eating his lunch and he chuckled and giggled all the way through. This is a fun book for all ages!
Find out what happens to Jimmy's hand. How can he get it smaller? Other children are beginning to notice! Jimmy knows that Dad may have the answer to shrink his hand. Does Jimmy listen to Dad? When a child understands that he is truly hurting others he becomes more mature. Find out what Jimmy does to remind himself to not be a bully!

Great Minds Think Aloud Review
Delightful, adorable and hilarious. When little Jimmy Alexander is warned by his father that his unwillingness to share and his inability to politely ask for things will eventually cause him trouble, he refuses to listen. Until, of course, he realizes that every time he says the word ‘gimme’ his hand grows.
Before long his hand is practically dragging along the floor and he begins to realize that he must change his ways before it is too late.
Sherrill S. Cannon’s books have a fantastic way of telling a story in such a vivid and imaginative way that children will not only learn good morals from her books, but will want to read them and have them read to them, time and time again.
If you are looking for the best possible story books for your child or grandchildren you must look for her books! I have fallen in love with them all and I know you will too! – GMTA, Kitty Bullard
