Hi everyone – meet Fireman Joe – your host for your trip through the world of “Lots and Lots of Fire Trucks and Firefighters”. Fireman Joe is one of over 1 million full-time and volunteer firefighters in service in the United States today. In real life Joe is a good father and husband, works as a salesman and spends much of his free time at the firehouse, volunteering for firefighting service. Joe is usually at the firehouse for a 24 hour period during which he will eat, sleep and stay trained on all the latest news and techniques for fighting fires and emergency rescues.
When he’s not on call waiting for the emergency bell to ring, Joe has other duties at the fire house. He may work on the fire trucks and equipment making sure they are kept spotlessly clean and in perfect working order, just in case. He may give a tour of the fire house to a class from school or a group of people from the community like the church, boy or girl scouts, senior clubs and others. He may also be assigned by the chief to cook one of the meals or clean-up around the living quarters.
Fire fighters today do much more than just put out fires and get cats out of trees. When you call 911 for help, fire fighters may be called to the scene. If there’s a car accident, if someone has a heart attack, if there is a gas leak or if someone is trapped in a high rise apartment fire fighters are trained to help rescue those in need of help.
