"Every time you appear on screen someone will die."

That's the stark warning given to top TV presenter Jessica Lee. She's the host of a confessional talk show on network television with millions of fans.

But one deranged viewer is out to destroy her career. To prove he means business he claims his first victim - a young woman who is found dead with her throat cut. Jessica and her bosses face an agonising dilemma: take the show off the air or risk more murders.

They decide to defy the killer - with dire consequences!

Excerpt

As I stared down at the figure on the ground I experienced an intense feeling of sadness. Life is so arbitrary, I thought. At the end of the day it’s all about luck. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why I gamble. Everything I do is a risk, every day could be my last. So I try wherever I can to beat the odds. It’s like a game, only deep down I know it’s one you can never win. Bad luck always gets you in the end.
Just like it got this poor slip of a girl.
She’d been dead only a couple of hours. Her throat had been sliced open and there was a knife wound just below her small left breast. She was in her late teens or early twenties. She lay sprawled on her back with her legs and arms splayed in a rough star shape. She was wearing faded denims and a plain pink T-shirt under a dark woollen fleece.

Cracking thriller. This was the first book I downloaded onto my new Kindle and I was really pleased. I'm in full agreement with the other five star reviewers. It's well written and fast moving. One of those books that grips you from the start. It features Scotland Yard's so-called Celebrity Crime Unit which deals with crimes committed against the rich and famous. I think this is a pretty good idea and I reckon the book would make a good movie.

I bought this book after reading another novel by the same author. Once again I felt compelled to write a short review because this was also a good, solid thriller. It involves a glamorous TV presenter who is told: "Every time you appear on screen someone will die." Guess what? She ignores the warning and the murders mount up. Good stuff!

Amazon 5 star review
What a great TV storyline, and my first time reading this author, they always say the best authors and storylines are from authors that know their subject, anyone who has ever watched the Jeremy Kyle type show here in the UK will understand why this subject is so topical, or the type of show made popular by Jerry Springer.
Great characters with a plausible London setting and a great detective as central character. I'll certainly be looking out for more of this authors work.
Highly Recommended.

Reader Reviews for "Stark Warning"

Reviewed by Talo Teetime 11/14/2012
The back of “Stark Warning” by James Raven immediately caught my interest because of the subject matter. How often have you thought, “If I see that celebrity on tv one more time, I am going to poke my eyes out!” Well “Stark Warning” takes it a morbid dark step further.
Raven does an excellent job in bringing the pulp like murder fiction to life. Raven joins the ranks of the greats, previous Pulp Fiction writers such as Dashiell Hammett, and Ray Bradbury.

Told in a first person narrative, Sam Quinn is the lead detective on the “Celebrity Squad” A squad formed to investigate the rising number of serial like killings of the famous. After a tragedy that blindsides Sam, he falls into a depression and reverts to his old ways of gambling and losing( online poker too sheesh). When I came to this part of the story I was a little put off and thought, ”Is this the hero of the book?”( Yes I am old fashioned) Then I continued to read along and came across this passage;

This is me, being put in my place.

Sam just explained to me why he was addicted to gambling after his tragedy( since I didn’t figure it out on my own). I liked that the writer just then, gave a little more depth so Sam.

All in all Stark Warning is a quick ,fun ,dark read for fans of mystery and thrillers!
