After nuclear war makes the Earth uninhabitable, humanity’s survivors are sheltered by the Reptons, an alien race from the Tau Ceti system. With a thriving human colony planted on Tau Ceti Two, the two races begin a program of expansion to the surrounding star systems. During their explorations, they come across a world where the native civilization has been wiped out by unknown invaders.
A Repton/human ship follows a mysterious signal in space to a system where they discover the Bardrosians. Like humanity, the Bardrosians are refugees, having fled their planet when it came under attack by the warlike Thessals.
Weapons officer Heather Dixon learns the ancient martial arts tradition of the Bardrosians to become an elite warrior against the Thessals. The odds are against her and the Repton/human/Bardrosian alliance. The Thessals possess a massive army of deadly ‘droids and a planet-busting super weapon.
The survival of the human race is once again in doubt.

“Admiral, Captain Hex Jara here.”
“Report.”
“I’m on the surface of Alpha Mensae 3—”
“On the surface?” Mirabco was puzzled. “Didn’t our sensors detect hostile environmental conditions there?”
“Yes, but they were wrong. I’ll explain in a moment. I must inform you of recent serious developments with potentially disastrous consequences, sir.”
“Oh?”
“We found out that Alpha Mensae 3 is inhabited by a species of highly-evolved bears called Bardrosians. Standing next to me is Commodore Baroldeez Booch.” Hex motioned for him to step over.
Booch stood in front of the image and took a slight bow. “Pleased to meet you, Admiral.”
“Likewise,” Mirabco replied with amazement.
“We’ll be working together in the near future, as your captain will explain.” Booch then stepped back, while Hex faced the admiral’s image and continued:
“Here’s what’s going on, sir. The Bardrosians fled from a distant star system after being attacked by a hostile alien species called the Thessals, and came across Alpha Mensae 3. Contrary to what we thought, the planet is habitable. The Bardrosians generated a special force field that caused misreadings in our sensors so that the planet would appear uninhabitable to us, but that field has deteriorated, which would account for the peculiar energy readings we detected. Now the Bardrosians are vulnerable. The hostiles have a massive fleet with the intention of conquering different star systems, including ours, and anyone else they might encounter.”
