It's been years since the dream...a memory as elusive as smoke and shadows in the night. But some dreams refuse to fade.
After graduation, Savannah traded the farm and her awkward past for the neon lights of the big city. Her life is finally back on track...until the dreams start to happen again. Now every night Savannah's slumber is filled with a man who is all too familiar-and this time he's bent on wooing her...at all costs.
“Savannah, get up!”
“Huh?” She bolted upright, her hand automatically reaching out as though to steady herself.
“It’s six in the morning. Get out of bed. There’s work to be done.” The salt and pepper haired man who stood next to the bed had worn a perpetual scowl for at least ten years and this morning was no exception.
“I’m up,” she mumbled. Although she wanted nothing more than to sink back into sleep, she knew better than to argue with her foster father. She knew from past experience that it was a battle she wouldn’t win. And so the minute he turned on one dusty heel and retreated back into the hallway, Savannah forced her sore limbs into action.
She quickly dressed and shoved her feet into a pair of well-worn boots before pausing in front of the mirror over her oak dresser. Her lips were red and swollen, and she touched a finger to them, her eyes wide with speculation.
The dream. It had been so vivid…so real. She had been there in the forest with him. They had…
She blushed and ducked her head as heat flooded her system at the memory of what had transpired between her and the dream lover. Of course, that was impossible. Yet her body clearly stated otherwise.
“Savannah!” Vern shouted up the stairs. “These cows aren’t going to milk themselves!”
“I’ll be right down,” she called out and hurried down the stairs to face another day.
He came to her in a dream, a sensual lover who fulfilled her fantasies and made her feel cherished. Too bad it was only for one night. It would be another five years before he appeared to her again, a specter of her past who rouses feelings in her she was never able to shake. In a way, she's waited for him all these years without knowing it.
When she finds out who and what he is, can she forsake her old life for a chance at true happiness, or will he forever remain just a dream lover?
This was a quick story about a girl who finds comfort with a boy, then grows up and finds love and acceptance in the arms of a dream lover. He's an incubus, one who's waited years to have her, and he will not be denied. It's a great love story about a woman who thinks she's imagining her sexy dream man, only to find out he's real, and what she does about it. Despite the story's short length, I was satisfied with the ending. A nice, quick read for anyone who wants a paranormal love story that's very mild, sex-wise.
The Romance Studio
At the age of eight, Savannah was taken in by her foster parents, the Holbrooks. There was no love but plenty of work for young Savannah. Her only fond memories are of a mysterious young boy and the night of her high school graduation. Now, five years later, her mysterious suitor has returned to her dreams and the the connection is instant.
Cairn has loved Savannah for years, but as an Incubus, he has quite a reputation to over come.
Incubus was a surprisingly sweet and lovely tale of love at the end of a rough childhood. I appreciated the fact that unbeknownst to her, Savannah had a love all her own in the midst of the indifference and neglect of her foster parents. Cairn redefines the definition of an incubus, he is neither evil or promiscuous and his devotion to Savannah was heartwarming. It was kept from being to sweet by the introduction of Savannah's rather dubious friendships with her old college roommate Rachel and Anthony, a casual boyfriend. This also gave Cairn the chance to swoop in and show off some of his macho chops. Very manly. This was just a perfect, light read, almost like a Disney fairytale.
Long and Short Reviews
On the eve of her high school graduation Savannah has a most decadent dream about a man she calls her angel. Everything is perfect and in her dream they make love. Cairn is an incubus and because of a technicality he’s forbidden from any contact with Savannah for five years. When they finally meet again Cairn woos her, gets to know the real Savannah and draws her out of her shell. The passion that ignited between them that first night rekindles and they struggle to make this heat between them work.
This is an interesting short story with a very fast pace. Savannah and Cairn’s relationship is well fleshed out – though the other subplots seem to race along very quickly in the background. While I feel the book could have done with a bit more detail and a slower pace, it’s easy to get caught up in Savannah and Cairn and the magic surrounding them. Both are clearly meant to be and love each other almost from their first meeting, but there are a number of obstacles they both need to conquer before they can get their happy ending.
This is a fun, quick read with a fair bit of spice and magic, excellent for one of those times when you don’t have long to indulge in a bigger story.
