Excerpt
It was late afternoon before Emma began to stir. Her sore
body protested against the hard ground, but that wasn’t
what woke her. She was hungry and the aroma of cooking
food was making her stomach gnaw and clamor for attention.
She turned her head to see who was at the fire fixing
their meal, Simon or Charles? But as she turned, she saw
that Simon was still asleep under the tree and not far from
him was Charles. She suddenly became very still.
There was a scrape of a utensil against a pan and then
the renewed sizzling of meat as if it had just been turned.
Emma’s Marriage Secret | 199
A moment ago Emma’s mouth had watered at the smell
of the cooking food; now it was dry, and her heart flipped
before starting to race.
Someone was at their fire! But who? She dared not
turn around yet. She thought quickly to where the nearest
weapon would be while she scolded herself for going to
sleep with no thought to protecting Simon. Her hand was
inching toward a small, inadequate stick, when she felt that
she was being watched. Her eyes flew to Simon.
He stopped her action with his look. Then she saw him
turn his attention back on the person by the fire behind her.
He slid his gun from the holster beside him and leveled it
over her head.
“You gonna let that guy shoot me, Emmie?”
Emma spun around and sat up, banging her head
against the underside of the wagon. She cried out in pain
as she tried to get a better look at the man who was still
crouched before the fire with his back toward her.
“Tsk! Tsk! Em! Thought you were more graceful
than that.”
“Tyler?” Emma scurried out of her bed on her hands
and knees. “Tyler, how did you find us? Why are you here?
I’m so glad to see you!”
Emma flung herself into Tyler’s arms while Simon and
Charles approached more cautiously. The lowered gun was
still in Simon’s hand, and an outrageously jealous expression
was on his face. Tyler was quick to notice it and just as
quick to pretend that he hadn’t. So that’s the way it is!
