An atheist colleague of mine was deeply entrenched in evolution as the explanation of life. He used to argue that if God was there, he ought to show himself or communicate audibly. In the absence of such evidence he concluded God was simply a figment of the human imagination. Many humanists reason that unless God gives them a concrete sign they will not believe he exists. This appears logical until you start to delve deeper. In using this line of argument humanists are puffing up their own importance and reducing God to their own size. If God created everything from the tiniest atom to the vast Universe, he must be amazingly big, fantastically clever, supremely authoritative and infinitely awesome. Why would such an immense God take any notice of a whinging little person saying, ‘Give me a sign or I won’t believe in you’? God reserves the right to hide himself! Actually, though, there are a number of signposts pointing towards him.
... There are times in our life when we become more acutely aware of our need for Godís presence. In times of extreme danger or anguish even the toughest cry out for his help. You may be travelling through a dark wilderness right now. Perhaps you have been physically or mentally abused. Someone you love deeply may be suffering or may have died. You may be burdened with serious financial stress. Mistakes you have made may have left you in painful turmoil. You may feel that your whole life is upside down.
While passing through such times of distress many people testify that in their extremity they sensed Godís presence most tangibly. He responded to their crisis with mercy, love, compassion and emotional healing. As they reached out to him they discovered he is as solid and dependable as a rock, a comforting light in their darkness and a rich source of hope and guidance. Certainly there was a defining moment for me when I allowed God to come in and sort out the mess I had made of my life. Sometimes itís as if God takes his hands off and leaves us to get into a pickle just to get our attention! ...
