"The prince is dead," Adrian whispered, his face losing its rubious tint and paling in a sudden and most alarming manner. "DEAD," he repeated with even more emphasis, as if I might have trouble understanding the word and so must have it said again. "And WE, the masters of Malmillard, had him under our charge. The queen...she'll have our heads at the least, at the very, VERY least. We'll all be tortured, drawn and quartered, racked, hanged, burnt at the stake, boiled in hot oil, fed to ravenous rats, beheaded, cast into the arena to be savaged by, er savages--"
