Book 9 of the Nublis Chronicles, The Spirit Dogs of Sirius is a complex story, tying in fantastic elements such as spirit dogs and wizards, leaving the reader breathless with the telling. Indeed, Kate Saunaby's sophisticated prose sweeps the reader away into a world of the fantastic filled with pepperpot stew, intrigue, and spirit dogs with telepathic abilities.

The Spirit Dogs of Sirius

Very highly recommended

Alar Zarkadon has no idea of the consequences that would result when he slips the stolen communicator onto his wrist and leaves the Jack of Diamonds where it had lain. Passing the rest of the loot to Bucky and Zack, he casually strolls out the hotel door.

Ahead of him a little girl struggles to hang onto her puppy, but the puppy escapes, and she immediately pursues it, disregarding oncoming traffic. Pushing the child to safety, Alar slips on something wet and is hit by a truck. Despite his protests, a MedEvac transports him to a hospital where he's diagnosed with a badly mangled arm, broken leg, and false identity. While Alar claims to be a registered antiquities dealer from the city of Maderia on the planet Sirius with no next of kin, genetic coding reveal him to be Jeray de MontGriffon. Cosmetic surgery, purple contacts and melanin injections to turn his skin black have kept him hidden for eight years.

When Jeray's parents were killed in a mountaintop flyer crash, his cousin Michael was named co-executor of their immense estate. A year later, the fourteen-year-old MontGriffon heir was abducted and murdered, but his body was never found. Through no fault of Michael's, the ransom effort went awry, and a mocking and extremely graphic video of Jeray MontGriffon's brutal death was received by the boy's guardian, Leon de MontGriffon. Despite every effort by Michael's Agency, Jeray's killers have vanished without a trace. Leon still wears an armband for his butchered nephew, and ceaselessly demands to know why his killers haven't been caught. Despite extraordinary efforts to solve Jeray's murder, Michael has never found the killers and the harrowing images of the brutal murder haunt his dreams. The vindictive Leon de MontGriffon is still looking for Michael's head on a platter. The prince has never been allowed to forget the screw-up that had cost Jeray his life, and only his close ties to the emperor have saved his career. In addition, Michael has to tread carefully when it comes to Leon MontGriffon. The Duke is the Emperor Janus' key man in the Nublian Parliament's Upper House, and one of His Majesty's most trusted councilors.

If Jeray MontGriffon and Alar Zarkadon are one and the same, then the boy must have been in collusion with his Siriun kidnapers. The question is why. Nothing will stop Michael from learning the answer. But even the answers will lead Jeray through a complex story line, tying in fantastic elements such as spirit dogs and wizards, leaving the reader breathless with the telling. Indeed, Kate Saunaby's sophisticated prose sweeps the reader away into a world of the fantastic filled with pepperpot stew, intrigue, and spirit dogs with telepathic abilities.

THE SPIRIT DOGS OF SIRIUS is a delightfully off beat, powerfully written novel that comes very highly recommended.
