Travellers' Tales: Stories from Near and Far is a collection of stories people wrote who attended Beth Fowler's 'Travel Writing for Publication' workshops. Whether you're an 'armchair' traveller, a day-tripper who tours locally, an adventurer who cuts new trails, or a combination of those, you'll read stories that speak to the curiosity we share.

Through the portals of these travellers' tales, you'll enter worlds where a camel repulses and amuses his saddle-sore rider, where mothers of Argentina's 'disappeared ones' inspire hope, where a dreaded trip to an Antarctic loo leads to epiphany…You'll accompany travellers as they conquer their fears in the face of desert bandits, battle a cyclone on the Great Barrier Reef, shave legs at a public bathhouse…You'll meet Mother Teresa in Calcutta, celebrate the millennium in Greenwich, fence at the Asian Games in Beijing…

Excerpt

People wander the bush and roadsides in groups, always happy and often singing. Women elegantly carry heavy water jugs on their heads past colourful roadside produce markets. Kenyans are largely a people surviving in wretched poverty, but they're proud, a people for whom jobs paying a few shillings a week are a status symbol. Travel to Kenya and open your mind, but hang on to your heart.

Professional Reviews

Why Do We Travel?
Can I stomach fish heads? Should I tip taxi drivers? Does a smile mean the same thing around the world? Will native speakers understand me when I communicate in their language? What's on the other side of that sand dune? Can I manage in a foreign country, on my own?
Travelling presents us with surprises and adventures we don't find in our day-to-day lives…and travelling poses challenges and questions, so we set off again.
While we journey over land, sea or sky, we're taking a parallel journey toward understanding others and ourselves better.
A source of entertainment, insights, information and humour, this anthology is confirmation that although our journeys take us on divergent paths, our desire to travel connects us. Journeys change travellers. In reading Travellers' Tales, we're changed, too.

Enjoy your journeys,

Michael Keenan,
Mayor City of Unley
